According to the VFW, which holds many meets involving its model plane clubs and others, timing in the very heart and essense of fair competition. The length of flight, as recorded by a stop watch, de termine the judges’ award of tro phies and grand championships. Victory Can Be Narrow. Championships sometimes hinges on "tenths of a second,” so an ac curate reading and recording of each contestant's flight time is of utmost importance. The time is measured in minutes, seconds and fifths of seconds. All official timing starts the in stant a contestant's plane is re leased for take-off from th'e ground or hand. The flight tiimng termi nates when the plane is either “down” or “out of sight.” Timers must not be influenced by specta tors who say they still see the plane, after it has disappeared from the timer's view. A plane may fly out of sight di rectly over the airport. Although it is still airborne the official time of flight stops when the airplane dis appears from the timer’s vision. The use of field glasses is not permitted. 10-Second Leeway. When a plane disappears from new behind trees or into the clouds [timers give the plane 10 seconds to reappear. If it' fails to show up within this period the timer stops his watch and records the watch minus 10 seconds. _ The timers for the National Capi tal Show are well versed In their jobs having acted in such capacities many times before.
