STOCKETT FISKE CO. 919 E St. N.W. NA. 9176 Antitrust Indictments Filed Against 45% of U. 5. Paint Industry By th* Associated Press PITTSBURGH, July 21. —Firms; which make nearly half the Nation's1 paints, varnishes and lacquers, and ! the men who run them, were under indictment today-^charged with a conspiracy to fix the prices of their products. A Federal grand jury, acting on Government complaints, handed down the indictments yesterday, naming 14 major paint companies and 20 officials. These companies, the indictments said, handed more than 45 per cent of the Nation’s billion-dollar yearly paint business. Attorney General Clark said the cases were a part of the Govern ment’s antitrust program aimed at "illegal conspiracies” in the housing fields. Rose Rapidly After OPA. He said Commerce Department records "indicate that prices in the paint industry rose more rapidly after the removal of OPA ceilings than in any other industry.” The indictments specifically ac cused the firms of engaging in "a combination and conspiracy to fix,1 stabilize, maintain and control the prices, discounts, allowances and terms of sale” of their products. The firms, the indictment said, agreed “to exchange with each other information about prices charged • * * and other factors affecting I prices. In Cleveland, spokesmen for two of the companies under indictment protested there was no basis for the charges. Adrian D. Joyce, chairman of the board of the Glidden Co., said: “Nothing to It.” “There's nothing to it. We never met with any other paint concern to discuss prices and costs. Our prices are very much the same as other firms due to competition.” Luther H. Schroeder, treasurer of ;Sherwin-Williams Co., declared: "We don't see any basis for it (the charges) whatsoever.” One indictment listed these firms as producers of paints, varnishes, enamels and lacquers: Sherwin - Williams, Cleveland: American Marietta Co.. Chicago; Cook Paint & Varnish Co., Kansas City: Devoe & Reynolds Co., Inc., New York: E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Wilmington, Del.: General Paint Corp., San Francisco; Glidden, Cleveland: the Interchemical Corp., New’ York, and Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., Pittsburgh. A second indictment named as producers of lacquers, varnishes, enamels and stains for use in the wood furniture industry: E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.; American-Marietta; Columbus Var- j nish Co., Columbus, Ohio; Grand Rapids Varnish Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.; the Lilly Co., High Point,! 1 N. C.; the Lilly Varnish Co., Indian- j apolis, Ind.; Sherwin-Williams, and |the Southern Varnish Corp., Roan >oke, Va. The indictments said the alleged conspiracy began in, 1937 in an effort Vflj' .spppress competition,” Dr. Blades Resigns Poll at Gailinger Dr. Brian Blades has resigned as ■ chief of the George Washington University surgical service at Gailin ger Hospital in order to devote his full time to activities at the new George Washington Hospital, uni versity officials said today. He has been succeeded by Dr. Blaine Harrell, assistant professor of clinical surgery at G. W. Dr. Walter A. Bloedorn, dean of the university Medical School, said he sent a letter to Dr. Alvin R. Sweeney, Gailinger superintendent, on June 9, asking that Dr. Blades! be relieved of duty "in view of the opening of the new G. W. Hospital.”' Last March Commissioner Guy j Mason and Dr. Blades were involved 1 in a controversy in which Mr. Mason accused Dr. Blades of allowing a non-Distriet resident to be ad-1 mitted to Gailinger and threatened to ask that he be removed from the Gailinger staff. Mr. Mason later publicly apologized. Dr. Bloedorn said the past differ ences between Dr. Blades and Mr. Mason were "water under the bridge” and that they had nothing to do with the request that Dr. Blades be released from his Gailin ger duties. He said Dr. Blades is needed every day at the university hospital to direct a doctor’s training program, undergraduate training at the medical school and research activities.
