Area Model Plane champ, today
Entered the third annual National
i Capital Model Air Show, with full
hopes of duplicating his performance
! of last year when he took top honors
'in the competition.
The big show will be held Sunday
at Andrews Air Force Base under
sponsorship of The Star, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, the National Airport
Club and the Civil Air Patrol.
Herbert, who lives at 1223 Orren
; street N.E., is a senior at McKinley
High School. He has entered a well
'tested plane in the free-flight class.
On May 31 he used this ship to take
first place in the small plane class
at a meet in Philadelphia.
At the second annual running of
i the National Capital Show last June,
his sleek planes ripped through the
! air at more than 100 miles an hour
| to bring him the top honors. He won
The Star Trophy and Certificate
\ with the title of Washington Area
champ. In addition, he won the
National Airport Club Trophy and
was named meet champ in the class
of 18 years old or under.
Six to Go to Detroit.
He also received a free trip to
Detroit to attend the International*
Model Plane Contest. This was
presented to him by the Plymouth
automobile dealers of the Metro
politan Washington Area. In this
year’s competition, two winners from
Washington, two from nearby Vir
ginia and two from nearby Mary
land. also are going to be eligible
for these Plymouth-sponsored trips
and the international competition
to be held in Detroit from August
18 to 23.
Herbert said.be had good reason
for delaying sending in his entry
blank for the National Capital
Show. He pointed out that he has
five planes, including the one which
won at Phitadelphia. They range
; in wingspread from 3 to 5 feet. Pour
■of them cracked up in Philadelphia,
however, and he has been fixing
! these for possible use at the Na
tional Capital Show, as well as get
ting his special entry into top shape.
His brother Warren. 13, a student
at Stuart Junior High School, has
been giving Herbert a hand at this
(and also helps him at meets, espe
cially when it comes to carrying
away handfuls of trophies.
Herbert has been building model
planes since he was 5. He plans to
study aeronautical engineering at
the University of Maryland and
thinks his model plane experience
will help him considerably.
Another Winner Enters.
Another prize winner in previous
National Capital competition yester
day sent in his entry blank for Sun
day's big show. He is Stewart Culp,
37, of 7409 Sixteenth avenue, Ta-1
koma Park. Md.

the Mayor’s Committee of New
York, CAP, and the VFW.

will be used in timing contestants;
at the Andrews Air Force Base
competition.

enter the National Capital Shew,
prospective contestants are urged1
