Clark Orders Survey
Of Collusive Action
On High Living Costs

in Philadelphia, Jacksonville,

.-in Boston, New York, Cleveland,
Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San
Francisco and Seattle.
The Attorney General asserted in
a statement:
The continuing high prices and
the growth of private economic
power compel an antitrust survey
•hroughout the country. The ex
panded field office program will
facilitate that survey and afford
,v nmpt action to meet these prob
lems.”
Mot* Follows Truman Appeal.
His statement followed-by a little
• more than 24 hours President Tru
man's appeal to the special session
i , nf Congress for prompt action to
curb inflation.
Mr. Clark announced last summer
that he had instructed the anti
trust division to concentrate its
efforts against any indicated con
spiracies to send food, clothing or
housing prices higher. A number
of antitrust actions were taken sub
sequently.
Last night’s announcement said:
"The field offices under this ex
panded program will encompass
substantially the entire country.
Each field office will attack monop
olies and other antitrust problems
within the several States which it
Ceovers.
Citizens' Aid Sought.
“From time to time, antitrust at
“tornevs will visit the Industrial areas
assigned to their field offices to un
cover illegal price-fixing and other
-restraints of trade and violations of
■'the antitrust laws which may exist.
"Each field office will assign per
aonnel to assist small businessmen
-to secure for them, wherever pos
sible, full opportunity and free com
petition.”
- The department said it "desires
the support and co-operation of
every citizen" and invited com
plaints from individuals.
Chileans May Employ
Aluminum to Make Cans
Orchardists and vegetable grow
ers in Chile are investigating use
of aluminum for cans, as a substi
tute for tin plate, Santiago reports.
Tests have shown that aluminum
..containers are satisfactory and can
' be melted down and the metal used
• again.
