Small Loan Firms Checked on Records A check is being made on all the small loan companies in Washing ton, C. T. Nottingham, . superin-' tendent of licenses, announced to day, and so far five firms are be lieved to be violating the law. The check was begun after an| examination of the Auto Loan Serv ice, Inc., 638 Pennsylvania avenue j S.E., showed the company was not keeping complete records. Charges were made against the company, and a hearing was held by the license board last week, and a deci sion is expected in the next few days. Since the Auto Loan Service case was brought to light Mr. Notting ham said he has received about 20 complaints against similar firms and decided to check all the small loan companies in the city. His investigation so far has re vealed that many of the complaints he received have a foundation. In one case, he said, a boarding house keeper complained she had bor rowed $300. with her furniture as’ security. She paid the loan back in three months and paid an addl-! tional $120 in interest. Mr. Not-i tingham said he questioned the' company on the transaction and | they agreed to pay back most of the interest. Another complaint he received1 was from a man who said the loan tompany had broken the lock on bis garage door and repossessed his automobile, on which he was paying back a loan. Mr. Nottingham said loan com panies found guilty of violating the law may have their license revoked or suspended for an indefinite period.
