AT TOOTt SAFEWAY STORE V Wall Against Radar Experiments Told ■y tfto Associated Press BALTIMORE, July 29— Dr. Don-; aid H. Andrew*, professor of chem istry at Johns Hopkins University, said yesterday British scientists j have made amazing strides toward building a wall against radar. Dr. Andrews, internationally known for his work with metals at low temperatures, has ]ust re turned from a series of international scientific conferences at Amsterdam, London and Paris. He said in an interview with the Evening Sun that the most, start ling thing he learned was at Ox ford. "It was the great amount of work the English have done in the Held of radar in the past year. “It is only in the past two or three years that any one has studied the response of atoms to radar. The British have worked especially with copper and iron. “A most significant paper reported on the shooting of radar waves into atoms between the poles of very strong magnets.' It was found that when the magnet was at just the proper strength, the stems become very strong absorbers and won't let radar waves through. "Thus they can tell when radar waves will pass through the atmos phere and when they will not.” Dr. Andrews said norfe of the scientists dealt with military appli cation of the findings but “it's not a very long jump.” The discoveries, he reported, will be valuable in making new types of magnets, particularly for telephones. The magnets may also make it pos sible for scientists to obtain abso lute zero in their laboratories "by squeezing out the last bit of heat from the atom.” PUC Elects Flanagan.
