He said his “Arab nation does not exclude any possible compromise that Secures justice and prevents un necessary bloodshed.” "We would like that efforts of Count Bernadotte in the refugee problem be successful, and after ward that any new proposals (for a Palestine settlement) which he will make should not be rejected out right but be fully discussed before they are put in final form,” he told a news conference. "If there should be any reason for their rejection, such a decision should also be preceded by joint discussion.” Bernadotte Sees King. Count Polke Bernadotte, the United Nations mediator, saw the king here Monday and said later that "as always, he was helpful.” Abdullah commands five of the armies arrayed against Israel. Count Bernadotte’s previous peace plan, which the Arab League re jected, would have annexed the Arab portions of Palestine to Trans-Jor dan. The King’s reference to the refugee problem concerned the 300, 000 to 350,000 Palestine Arabs who have been driven from their homes. The King’s carefully chosen words promising Arab consideration of a Palestine "compromise” set a prece dent among Arab statemen. Until now, all have avoided any public ut terance indicating wiUingness in that direction. U. N., Red Cross Fight Typhoid Among Refugees ALEXANDRIA. Egypt, Aug. 4 (P) —United Nations and Red Cross of flcials took measures today to fight a typhoid epidemic they fear may strike among Arab refugees from the Palestine war. Sir Rafael Cilento, an Australian who represents the refugee division of the Social Affairs Department oi the U. N„ said last night there was grave danger of such an epidemic He said the refugees are homeless and eye infection is widespread. The Red Cross has prepared s large quantity of typhoid vaccine and doctors have inoculated more than 20,000 against the disease in Ramallah. The number of Arab refugees is estimated to be between 250,000 and 350,000. Bernadotte in Alexandria. Count Polke Bernadotte, U. N Palestine mediator, arrived in Alex andria by plane yesterday. A press officer on his staff said Count Ber nadotte’s plan to visit Stockholm for a Red Cross conference August 9 was not now certain because ol the refugee problem and efforts tc demilitarize Jerusalem. The press officer said both Jewish and Arab leaders had agreed in principle to the demilitarization of the Holv City, but there were many problems. Mdst soldiers who have been fighting in Jerusalem have their homes there. The announced Jewish ambition to incorporate Jeru salem into Israel and Arab fear; that Irgun Zvai Leuml and Sterr dissidents are preparing to attack Arab quarters in the city also were ■ described as obstacles. Three VA Medical Officials To Go to European Sessions Three Veterans’ Administrator medical officials will attend inter national medical meetings in Eu rope this fall, the agency reported 1 today. Dr. Paul B. Magnuson, VA chiel medical director, will attend the International Congress on Indus trial Medicine in London and the Congress of the International So : ciety of Orthopedic Surgery and Trauma in Amsterdam. Dr. Mag nuson will attend the meetings, both in September, at his own expense. Dr. Harvey J. Tompkins, VA neu ropsychiatric chief, will attend the Internal Congress for Mental Health in London August 11 to 21, and Miss Ruth Addams of the VA nursing service, also will attend the London meeting. t How many waiters are there in this picture? Mex., Aug. 4.— An estimated 18,000 reservation and Pueblo Indians will have the right to vote in New Mexico for the first time if a new ruling by a Federal Court is upheld. A three-judge court held yester day that New Mexico’s constitu tional provision barring “Indians not taxed” from voting is “discrimi nation on the grounds of race.” The State courts have held that “Indians not taxed” means Indians living on Federal land who are exempt from State property taxes. The Federal Court said Indians should not be required to pay a tax in order to vote when other citizens do not have to meet the same re quirement. The State Attorney General's Office said the judgment “probably’’ would be appealed to the United States Supreme Court. Requiem Mass Tomorrow For Sister St. Gabriel High requiem mass for Sister St. Gabriel Vincente of the Sisters of Providence, sacristan of the Im maculata Seminary here, who died Monday, will be held tomorrow morning in the chapel of St. Mary of the Woods Convent in Indiana. Burial will be in the convent ceme tery. Sister St. Gabriel died at the seminary here, after collapsing out side the chapel Monday afternoon.
