Farms See No Need
Of Displaced Persons

The University of Maryland Ex
tension Service said Initial returns
from a survey it is making indicate
the State's farmers do not need 1,500
workers from a displaced persons
camp in Europe.
An announcement from Frank
furt, Germany, said Sunday that
1,500 Ukranian agriculture workers
have been lined up for transfer to
Maryland.
Dr. T. B. Symons, dean of the
University College of Agriculture
and director of the Extension Serv
ice, directed an inquiry among
county agents to see if the workers
are needed. He started the check
at the behest of the State Employ
ment Service.
Twelve of the State's 23 counties
have so far responded. Some of
them said they could use up to a
hundred workers. Some said they
need none.
Frederick County reported "no
one seems optimistic on the idea
but a few farmers are interested.”
Anne Arundel County said it
might take ”10 or 12 families” and
house them at Harwood Camp for
harvest work.
Garrett County said it needs none
State Department officials said
they felt the Frankfurt announce
ment “premature,” but pointed out
205,000 displaced persons will be
handled under a new authorization
by Congress.
Farm Bureau officials commented
that Maryland has all the seasonal
workers it needs, but can tise some
year-round farm help.
American U. to Hold
Annual Arts Symposium
The American University'* sum
mer Inter-session in the Arts will
sponsor its annual arts symposium
from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow in
Clendenen gymnasium on the uni
versity campus.
The symposium will comprise
demonstrations in painting, dancing
and music in an pffort to display
the relationship of the three art
mediums. An open discussion led
by Paul Hume, music critic of The
Washington Post, will follow the
demonstrations.
