Italy Is Ready to Lead
European Nations in
Union, Sforza Says

j ROME, Aug. 4—Italy is ready to
take the lead in surrendering na
tional sovereignty to effect Euro
pean union, Foreign Minister Count
Carlo Sforza said today.
The 74-year-old statesman urged
union now as the only cure for the
continent's past war economic and
i political ills and the sole hope for
j peace.
To bring it about and to do away
i w'ith ‘ archaic frontiers and archaic
; customs duties,” he declared, this
nation is ready to "accept curtail
ment of its political sovereignty,
even in the most unexpected a.s
! pects.”
Other Must Do Likewise.
He said there was but one condi
tion: "That others do the same.”
A long-time advocate of unity.
Count Sforza had his hand
j strengthened last week w’hen the
Senate, in approving the European
Recovery Program accords, urged
their early development into effec
tive union.
Only Communists and fellow
traveling Socialists demurred.
The question of national sov
ereignty has been and is one of the
primary stumbling blocks in the
way of a united Europe.
"To say that European countries
ought to federate.” Count Sforza
said, "is to say that they must re
strain in theif economic life useless
: competition and divergent efforts.
Autarchies C reate Misery.
“It means renouncing progressive
areas of sovereignty, customs bar
riers, financial restrictions, anti
j economic distribution of tasks and
functions.
j “It is these little and harmful
autarchies that bear one single
fruit: the misery of Europe.”
It is necessary, therefore. Count
Sforza said, “to reopen Europe to
the (free) circulation of goods, of
labor and of ideas." Italy knows,
he continued, that this is the only
way to arrive at that economic co
operation “which is the basis and
' end of the generous assistance lent"
'through the Marshalla Plan.

Plan to Boycott Butchers
In Texas Gains Recruits

DALLAS, Tex., Aug. 4—Texas
butchers heard a ringing in their
ears today—the jangle of thousands
of telephone bells as new recruits
in 10 cities talked up the housewives’
war against high meat price!.
The movement to boycott butcher
shops between August 9 and August
16 spread yesterday to Beaumont,
Galveston, Abilene and Hamlin.
Earlier, housewives in Orange,
Paris, Corpus Christi and Waco
joined with women in Dallas, where
| the boycott campaign began. Mrs.
