She's 12 years old. Patsy LI, the little Chinese girl who six years ago mysteriously turned up in the midst of the shooting war on Guadalcanal, today is studying the three Rs in a Singa pore school. • But she hasn t forgotten her days with the United States Marines in Gaudaicanal. She hasn’t had a chance. Newspaper stories have kept the memofy alive for her. Little Patsy, like many a young ster her age, is limelight-conscious. But in her case what is usually a mere "stage” threatens to become a serious personality problem, ac cording to her guardian. That's why there are to be no more inter views. A lot of American Marines who were on Gaudaicanal will remember Patsy and wish her happily over the rocky road of adolsecence. They will remember her as the six-year-old, very sick with malaria, who one day in the heat of battle was carried by natives to the Amer ican lines. She had been found, wounded and very ill, in an abandoned Japanese camp. The Marines adopted her and she became famous as "Patsy of Guadal canal.” Patsy had been separated from her mother, Mrs. Ruth LI of Singa pore, when the ship on which they were escaping from Malaya was torpedoed off The Netherlands In dies in February, 1942. Mrs. Li was rescued. No trace was found of her child at the time. Three thousand miles from the scene of the sinking, on Guadal canal an American correspondent wrote up the story of the little Chinese girl. In New York Mrs. Ruth Li's sis ter, a cancer research worker, read the story and noted that the little girl answered to the name of Patsy Li—the name of the little niece lost in the torpedoeing off the Dutch East Indies. She wrote to her sister. It was a clue—and the unhappy Singapore mother flew to the orphanage in the New Hebrides where the girl had been placed and recognized Patsy as her missing daughter. How she travelled the 3,000 miles from the place where the ship sank to Guadalcanal, nobody knows. Probably the Japanese fished her out of the sea, adopted her and brought her with them to Guadal canal. It's still a mystery to every one, including Patsy. Today in Singapore a growing-up Patsy often asks: "Have you ever met ap American Marine They're wonderful.’’ * Quality Products at Prices You Can Afford VENETIAN BLINDS I • CLEANED I Thoroughly ma- ' chine laundered for as little as 98c • REPAIRED Skilled men will re p a i r and retape your blinds. • Window Shades Expertly Repaired Cleaned or reversed for as little as 35c each. • ESTIMATES FURNISHED FREE No obligation.
