Israeli Magistrates Court today freed three of five Britons held or espionage charges. The other two were ordered held an additional 10 days without bail. Thomas Hawkins and Frederick Sylvester were returned to custody, while Michael Bryant, Anthony Downes and Alfred Leech were freed when the prosecution told Judge Eliezer Malchi ‘‘there is insufficient evidence to ask them to face charges.” All five defendants were officials of the Jerusalem Electric Corp. They were arrested by Irgun Zvai Leumi in Jerusalem July 6 and turned over to the Israeli government for in vestigation and possible trial. The Soviet party totaled 17 per sons, including three attaches and three secretaries. They arrived at Haifa yesterday aboard the Russian steamer Nakhodka. Arab Nations Still Undecided On Israel's Peace Talk Bid CAIRO, Aug. 10 (jP).—An Arab league official said yesterday that the Arab nations had not yet made a decision regarding an Israeli bid for peace talks. Abel Moneim Mustafa Bey, head of the Arab League’s political de partment added, however, that an indication of the probable Arab re ply could be found in the fact that since 1939 the Arabs have refused to have any conference or other direct contact with Zionists. He said the U. N. mediator, Count Polke Bemadotte, in conveying the peace bid from Israeli Foreign Min ister Moshe Shertok, told the Arab governments Israeli expects an Arab replay "as soon as possible.” In Jerusalem, John L. MacDonald, American consul general, has pro tested to the Jewish military gov ernor of Jerusalem over shots fired I at Americans and at cars flying the American flag. Vegetable Growers Told Sharp Price Drop Is Due By th* Associated Press BALTIMORE, Aug. 10.—Farmers attending the Vegetable Growers’ Association of America convention were warned yesterday by two ex perts to get set for a drop in prices. “History indicates a violent drop is likely,” said Dean W. I. Myers of the New York State College of Agri culture, “but there is a possibility that the decline may be less violent this time as a result of the restraint against prices exercised by large corporations, unemployment insur ance and other factors. “No one knows just when a reces sion may occur, or whether it will be drastic or gradual,” Dean Myers admitted. But he said it is coming, and told the 800 vegetable growers to protect themselves by avoiding overexpansion of credit. Dr. R. B. Corbett, director of the University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture, agreed with Dean Myers. “Put away a few dollars and keep away from installment buying,” he advised. “Live within your Income even if it hurts.” Wallace Will launch % Campaign alRally In Bridgeport Aug. 21 By the Associated Press NEW YORK, Aug. 10.—Henry A. Wallace will open his presidential campaign formally on August 21 at a rally in Bridgeport, Conn. The Progressive Party candidate ! will speak at 8 p.m. (EDT) at Can delite Stadium under auspices of the People's Party of Connecticut. The rally will be Mr. Wallace’s first public appearance since his acceptance speech at the Progres sives’ Philadelphia Convention on July 24. Progressive Party officials, who announced the rally speech today, said Mr. Wallace plans to outline in more detail than in past speeches “his program for peace, abundance and freedom." They said the Bridgeport appearance will not be part of the extensive tours planned by Mr. Wallace for later in the campaign.
