British Samoa, Aug. 10. <CDN).—The cities are winning the village youth of the 8outh Pacific, according to an American mission ary who has concluded a lifetime of service in this little metropolis of Polynesia. "The young men go to ‘cities’ like Apia and Pago Pago in American Samoa,” Father Joseph Deihl of Chicago said before he sailed for home, "They get cash jobs, particu larly plentiful in these days of easy money. Gradually they cut them selves off from the security of their clan and its ownership of the land." Asked about the progress of re ligion in this area, Father Deihl said the future of missions, both Protestant and Catholic, is good. "Of course, he added candidly, "there isn't any paganism left to convert. It's a matter of protecting Christianity against the same ene mies as it has in the United States or Europe.” Father Deihl, a member of the Marist Order, served 28 years in the South Pacific. He goes to the United States—his first trip there in 16 years—for treatment for a heart ailment. After a visit with his fam ily in Chicago, he plans to consult a Cleveland physician to determine whether his cardiac condition war rants an operation.
