Small Town Love and Politics Treated in Palace Feature By Joy Carmody That mask of serenity which small towns wear to conceal the often sordid truths about themselves is lifted in “The Walls of Jericho,” new; screen feature at Loew's Palace. Stripped of its disguise, Jericho, a neatly groomed community in Kansas, is revealed as another abode of! man in which the Ten Commandments are not nearly so well kept as the houses and gardens. Exposes of this sort are the routine functions of fiction and the movies, and while 20th Century Fox has gone to some pains with this one, it is by no means a master work. Its chief virtue is that it pro vides work for Linda Darnell, Anne Baxter, Cornell Wilde and quite a collection of incidental players. It cannot hurt that all of them are more glamorous than an equivalent group of small town citizens to be found in a place like Jericho, Kans. The surface glints of small town characters captured by these vari ous performers are properly attrac tive. Tills was assured by the studio in its provision for Wilde of a ward robe that certainly should have qualified him as 6 of the 10 best dressed men in the world in that period of Jericho's history. His role, that of an idealistic county attor-! ney. clearly supports him, in a style EVENING PARKING 4QC 6PM TO CAPITAL GARAGE 1320 N. Y. Any less honorable young man would have aroused a lot of sus picion as to where he got the money for such ciothes. * * * * Paul Wellman wrote the origl-1 nal novel on which the Palace film is based and one who neglected to read it can only surmise that La marr Trotti’s adaptation is faithful. At any. rate, it presents a cross section of Jericho’s upper, lower, and middle crusts which shows that none of them is better than it should be. Wilde is the central character around whom Jericho’s life flows. As'eity prosecutor he has dedicated himself to public service. This is the more admirable In view of the circumstance that his private life is spiritually a wretched one. His wife, pretty enough in a hatchet faced way, Is the adder-tongued type who tipples steadily, appar ently to forget the meanness of her nature and her Inadequacy as the mate of such a man. Nevertheless, she Is the woman who makes his bed and he Is loyal I to her. This is not an easy thing. It requires of Wilde that he shall; resist the sweet, innocent appeal ofj Anne Baxter, and the ill-concealed; passionate acquisitiveness of Lindaj Darnell. Miss Baxter only admires him the more for his decency in this attitude. Not Miss Darnell. As the wife of the town publisher, who1 is Wilde's best friend, she counts herself scorned and acts accordingly. Her whole purpose becomes one of making her man, Kirk Douglas, the instrument by which she shall crush Wilde. You can do a lot with a weak publisher in this sort of game and Miss Darnell plays it to the hilt. * * * * Director John M. Stahl is con-; tent to deal with the simple blacks! The incident with which this story is concerned is principally a series of parties—private and com-i munity affairs—against which the virtues of the one group are pitted against the vices of another. The size and number of these social af fairs indicates that Jericho has virtually no time for anything but dining, dancing and politicking. In their way, however, they serve to move the story along to a climax in which the town's most charming! adolescent, a girl, is placed on trial for the murder of the community’s! most amoral bum. This is about as! dirty as politics can get and it provides a climax in which Wilde and Miss Baxter, defending tha girl,! are pitted against an array of evil community influences which wdll make you glad you live in a city as large as Washington. * * * * It is a commentary on th* acting and other qualities of “The Walls of Jericho" that the most honestly dramatic quality fn it is to be found in the contrast between the out ward peace of the physical com-1 munity and the turmoil of its col lective soul. That this rather seeps through probably is due to the writing of the Messrs. Wellman and Trotti. This represents a moral victory over considerable glamor ous opposition, most prominently that of Miss Darnell. Best acting performances are those of Miss Baxter as the lovely,! guileless girl who becomes Jericho's first woman attorney; Ann Dvorak as the tippling wife of the hero, and Kirk Douglas as the essentially honorable publisher diverted from the path of duty by his beautiful witch of a wife. Take advantage of it. If you get offers of big show's, take them, but make sure they're big. Get w'hat you can and then get out.” Johnny's own pro career started slowly. After his victories in the 1928 Olympics, he hooked up with a swimming suit outfit. “I had a nice deal—traveling around the country giving exhibitions,” he relates. “I was making a couple of hundred a week, with a chance to work up in the company.” While peddling his swim suits through California, Johnny's phys ique was lamped by movie moguls and deemed ideal for the venerable G-string of Edgar Rice Burroughs' king of the apes, Tarzan. For 16 years Johnny grunted and bellowed his way through the jungle features. This year he and Tarzan's film mentor, Sol Lesser, had a falling out. Hollywood gossiped that John ny's gold had turned to pot. But wdien I saw him on the "Jun gle Jim” set he looked pretty trim in his safari suit. ★ it * * “I just couldn't make a deal with Sol,” he explained. "Whenever I went into his office for a conference, there were 30 other guys shouting at me.” So Johnny set up a deal for "Jun gle Jim,” which can be described as Tarzan with clothes. He'll make two of the features a year for five years and he’ll rake In part of the profits. The latter should be con siderable, since the films are made in 12 days at a $200,000 cost. He was as intrepid as ever In the scene I watched. Attacked by a fierce native band, he was tossing1 them around at will, dodging flames and spears all the while. "This sort of thing goes on throughout the picture," he said. “We tore up all the dialogue.” He’ll also be back in the swim in this film, his bath being interrupted by an octopus and crocodile. Johnny’s new deal isn’t going to his head, or his pocketbook, yet. His business agent keeps him on a strict $50 weekly allowance. “But.” he adds, “if I’m a good boy and stay out of the night clubs, my business agent says I can have a trip to Honolulu after this pic ture.” Today’s feature: 20 years ago In the movies: Mary Pickford made national news by cutting off her curls. . . .
