Although Secretary of Defense Forrestal pointedly stated that the recommendation was not “a pattern for legislative action • • * and does not. at this stage, constitute mill tary establishment policy", the bu reau is taking no chances. The bureau’s information office yesterday issued three simultaneous press releases in line with this pol icy. The releases were not distrib uted through the Regular Army or Defense channels as has been the case with National Guard announce ments in the past. They came di rect from the bureau's own office and so stated. The first announcement told how 43 generals of the Regular Army started in the National Guard, one of them being a member of the Notebook (Continued From Page A-26.) sugar is rationed. Those whose eyes begin to itch and noses clog when the ragweed particles contaminate the atmos phere know by experience that re lief is to be found at sea, and to some extent at the seashore, in the woods and in the mountains. The Abbott survey designates areas in the interior, as well, where ragweed is relatively" nonexistent. With Buffalo, N. Y., arbitrarily rated as 100, the scale ranges from zero at several places to 140 at Des Moines, i Iowa. The belt of north central and south central States, is the greatest ragweed pollen offender. The only large region found to be “absolute :ly free of ragweed and all related pollens” lies in western Oregon and around Puget Sound. However, pollen counts in other areas rate zero on the scale. Guided by the ratings, the AAA is recommending these areae to hay fever sufferings: The White Mountains of New Hampshire, Isle Royale in Michigan, parts of northern Maine, Nova Scotia, the Rocky Mountains and Miami, Fla. The Abbott Laboratory's map and data show a number of spots with zero ratings, although zero does not mean complete absence of pollen. California, a large part of Colorado and western Nevada are among the zero areas. In the Mexican border area and in northern Texas are to be found ratings as low as 1. Much of Florida also falls in the “ideal” classification of 5 or below. It also stated that one-third of the Guardsmen inducted into the Army at the outset of World War r n were officer* by the end of ho* till tie*. A third reletse entitled “National Guard Develops Leaders Nation wide” stated that one-third of all ranking military police officers started in the Guard. The committee which made tiff merger recommendation was headed by Assistant Secretary of the Army Gordon Gray.
