SIR CONDITIONED DINNER NOW BEING SERVED IN THE LOUNGE :£ After Dark Now You Can Take It For Granted That That Is Music By Sidney By HARRY Mac ARTHUR Habit, if you don't mind the ob vious not only dissected but vivi sected before your very eyes, is a strong influence. It makes a man on his way to and fro between bus and office cross Twelfth street be fore he crosses Pennsylvania ave nue, just as if there were some law about it. It makes him refer con tinually to the Earle Theater, no matter what the Warner Bros, want it to be named. It makes him think always of that hotel as the Pow hatan, no matter how long it has been the Roger Smith. It makes him wander around under the delusion that there still is a Con duit road here in Washington, even if it does seem to have disappeared during the war. 28 YEARS AND STILL A LEADER! The other day one of the papers carried a picture of the festivity in progress at some local affair, with a caption stating that the dancers could be seen dis porting themselves to the music of the “Meyer Davis orchestra.” Now, this undoubtedly was set down by an old-line Washington society re porter, who simplified her life long ago by taking it for granted that any music she hears at any func i tion she attends is Meyer Davis , music. Things have changed, thougl^. I That society reporter still can sim ' plify her life, all right, but she can make her batting average look a lot better if she just assumes the music she hears at any party is music by Sidney. That’s what it was in the case at hand. This may make some other people who book bands for private parties unhappy with us, but it can’t be helped. What we know is that Sidney music is imperative enough for any debu tante function that he has already been signed up for two coming-out parties scheduled for December, 1949. That's 1949, not 1948. If you want Sidney music in December, 1948, it may even now be too late. This warm air the winds have washed up here from the Gulf of Mexico may not have held much promise of it, but autumn is upon u*. With it, autumn is bringing a considerable flurry of increased activity on the After Dark scene. Item: Guy Lombardo and orches tra arrive at the Embassy Room of the Statler Hotel on September 15. It seems to have been only the boat that he fractured in the Gold Cup mishap and not his arm. That was only sprained badly, which is enough, but not enough to keep him from bringing the “sweetest music this side of heaven” to the Embassy Room as scheduled. Item: The Club Cairo reopens on September 22, operating under com pletely new management which has some interesting ideas about run ning a night club. “We don’t want those $100 spenders,” a spokesman was saying the other day. “Oh, we ll serve them, of course. Their money’s as good as any body's money. But we won’t be catering to them. What we want to do is have a place where a man can bring a date, have a couple of drinks, eat a nice dinner, see a show and get out under 10 bucks. We’d rather have the place filled with people like that than have a few ‘big spenders’ |nd a lot of empty tables. The people who find out it's a nice place, with decent food and doesn’t cost too much are the ones who’ll keep com ing back and build a steady busi ness. ’ The management doesn’t have any delusions of grandeur about the floor shows, either, but hopes to keep them entertaining. First headliners will be a comedian whose name was on the tip of the three fingers we use for typing when we started this sentence and Sonny Skylar, the popular singer. There'll be continuous music at the Cairo when shows are not in pro gress, Sparty Ddfitto’s orchestra al ternating with a rumba band rencently at New York's Stork Club. It just came back. The comic's name is Artie Dann. Item: The Shoreham Blue Room, with Barnes music, of course, re opens in accordance with the weather, as has already been re ported. This should be around September 20, with the Palladiah Room following about September 23. Those two places make it awfully difficult for a man w#io lives north of the Shoreham to get south of it. Item: The Club Bali has quite a season lined up, with Louis Arm strong. Cab Calloway and others scheduled for appearance.
