AMG Plans Increase' Of 2,000,000 Tons In Ruhr Steel Output ■y th* AiMciat*4 Frau BERLIN, Sept. 7.—Ruhr steel production—now at it* highest since the war—will be Increased another 2,000,000 tons In the next two years, the American Military Government said today. To support this increase, arrange ments already have been made to import from Sweden 3,400,000 tons of iron ore and other iron-bearing raw materials. Special efforts are being made to increase Ruhr production of coal and steel, not only to revive Western Germany's economy, but to increase its contribution to the European Recovery Program, AMG said. The planned increase in steel pro duction was reported in AMG’s EDUCATIONAL. It reported Germany’s steel pro duction had hit a new postwar high during July at 487,124 metric tons, an increase of 21 per cent over the prevtttis month. This Is an annual rate of 9,500,000 tons. The target Is to step this up to 7,500,000 tons annually in 1949-50. the report said. Under the revised level of industry plan adopted a year ago to make Western Germany self sustaining, the production of ingot steel is permitted to reach 10,700, 000 tons annually. Sweden to Receive Steel. The deal for high-grade ore from Sweden for the Ruhr mills was made under a trade agreement with the Swedes for 1949. The bizonal area’s exports to 8weden under this treaty will include 125,000 tons of hot rolled steel products, 6.000 tons of cold rolled steel products. 25,000 tons of pig iron and 25,000 tons of scrap. The AMG report also disclosed: 1. Ruhr coal production set a new postwar record during July of 7,760,900 metric tons, a gain of 5 per cent over June. 2. Food imports for the bizonal area soared to a new record during August of more than 1,000,000 tons. This was 40 per cent more than the previous month. Carl Mclntire, president of the Interna tional Council of Churches, said yes terday that the World Council of Churches has become a “front for world socialism.’' Mr. Mclntire. pastor of the Bible Presbyterian Church of Collings wood, N. J., was elected president of the International Council at a conference' in Amsterdam that opened August 11. The following week the World Council also opened its conference in the Dutch city. He told newsmen representatives of 63 Protestant denominations from 29 countries had joined the International Council of Churches. His group.
