Eto«. 7-9 Young Israeli Veterans Start U. S. Tour for United Jewish Appeal Nine young people of Israel, vet erans of the new Jewish state’s bat tle against the Arab world, are off today on a three-month Nation-wide tour of the United States in behalf of the $250,000,000 United Jewish Appeal. At the State of Israel mission, 2210 Massachusetts avenue N.W., they told their story yesterday. It was a simple one. “We all of us fight for freedom,” said Corpl. Alisa Pneuli, a 32-year old girl who served with a company active in the battle of Jerusalem. “But we don’t do it of our own free will. This war was forced on us. Most of us are students, and what we want is to go back to our work.” Capt. Yehuda Koppel, 30, Russian born leader of a Hagannah com mando squad, put it still more sim ply- ' \ “We had to do it," he said. The group, five women and four men, look like American college youths in uniforms and sunburns. Happily but a little self-consciously, they puffed American cigaretes as they spoke. Girl Trooper Since 14. Lt. Shula Prieberg, a 24-year-old Lithuanian-bom matron who has been a Hagannah trooper since she was 14 and served at one time as an instructor in the use of small arms, explained that, in the early stages of the Arab-Jewish war, women served alongside men in frontline combat. Now, however, she said, they have retired to positions slightly behind the lines, where they perform serv ice duties. The war is currently in a period of restless truce, with fre quent violations reported. A Haifa fashion designer in ci vilian life and former columnist for the Palestine Post, Lt. Prieberg is the only one of the women in the group who uses lipstick. “I use it because I like it,” she explained. “The others don’t.” The other young women are Sergt. Rica Menache, 23, who comes from the Belgian Congo, another veteran of the Jerusalem fighting; Corpl. Naomi Tulman, 20, native Palestinian medical worker who was captured by the Arabs at Kfar Etzion, and Sergt. Maj. Nira Ha rari - Goldstein, 23, Haifa - bom nursing officer, who spent three months on Cyprus last winter when the British caught her trying to smuggle Jewish refugees into Pales tine from Italy. Youngest Is 19. On the male side, Capt. Alexander Albala, 25, came from Budapest, Hungary, to lead a Hagannah com pany. Lt. Zerubavel Chefetz, 23, has been with Haganah since he was 13, and has been skirmishing with the Arabs off and on ever since. The youngest of the group, 19 year-old Lt. Itzchak Ben Menahem, has been wounded twice while tak ing part in the capture of some 16 Arab villages. Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion gave the young fighters spe cial permission to come to this country in behalf of the fund-rais ing drive. Money collected in the appeal, according to a formal statement, will be used “to support the immigration and settlement in Israel of homeless Jews from Eu rope.” SAVE VALUABLE TIME ON PACKAGED MAIL .S Now! S. Policies By tht Associated Press NEW YORK, Sept. 9.—Dr. Abba Hillel Silver says Israel now is self-supporting. Hie chairman of the World Zionist Organization made the statement at a news conference yesterday, shortly after his return from the Holy Land. He said a “clear separation” has been effected between the Zionist organization and - Israel's govern ment. The Zionist group no longer will contribute funds to the Jewish state, he said, since Israel now is paying its own way. Dr. Silver said the people of Israel feel “that our State Depart ment has put every obstacle in the way of full recognition” of the new state. The State Department, he said, "has blocked a United States loan to the new state. It has interfered with the free movement of refugees to Israel from the American oc cupation zones on the basis of an unwarranted interpretation of the terms of the truce." Dr. Silver said the United States Government has "denied passports to American citizens” wishing to go PENS REPAIRED while you wait Antherieei Sheaffer—Parker E vers hart— W atermav jgggj|g|g| D. J.
