Bert Wheeler Talks of a Play And Money He Forgot to Save By Jay Carmody. • When you were a small boy and your mother told you not to talk •bout money, as if it, too, were one of the bad words, she certainly was not preparing you for a future which would include having luncheon with Bert Wheeler, the comedian. Money is one of the things you have to talk about with Bert because once upon a time he and his partner, Bob Woolsey, made so much profit for a movie studio that it, the studio, stopped being a mud puddle and oecame a pane. This was RKO which, when it made “Rio Rita” with Wheeler ana Woolsey, was a quagmire, and is now fashionable enough to be owned by Howard Hughes. You just can't keep money out of a conversation with Wheeler. * * * * It comes up, for instance, when you ask the amiable little comedian what he would change most about his career if he had it to live over again. “This time,” he says with a grin, “I’d save my money.” ‘‘And otherwise,” you suggest. ‘‘Otherwise, I’d do the same thing all over again,” Wheeler says. “After all, I’ve had a wonderful time. I’m a happy sort, and I don’t have any thing like a morbid regret that I’m not richer than I am. Funny thing Is that I really don’t think much about that sort of thing and I guess I never did. The fact is that, at 54, I’m just as ambitious as ever, but still not about dough. There are still a lot of things I’d like to do. and even if time is getting shorter, I still think I’ll do them ” EVENING PARKING AOc ‘'M ,° CAPITAL GARAGE 1320 N. Y. Ay*. N.W. LINE I Call "Bob" McLaughlin RE. 2102 Wheeler’s funniest memory of being a businessman, more than an actor, was when he and Woolsey stuck RKO for their biggest wad of | cash. It had nothing to do with the oomedians suddenly becoming I sharp. •‘We simply got tired of making ! the pictures, which, after Rio Rita' | were not ve^ good,” Wheeler re calls. ‘Our contract had run out I and we ,were in no mood to work. RKO offered us a flat $85,000 to make one more musical, and when we turned it down, the studio just thought we were getting canny. With nothing else to do, we ran the negotiations along, you know, as a sort of gag. Well, the result was that we finally worked out a per centage deal and, what do you know, we made $200,000—all because we didn't want to be bothered.” ♦ * * * Wheeler, headlining this week's .stage show at Loew's Capitol, finds his consuming ambition these days is to locate a legitimate play that will last long enought to give him the feeling of being a dramatic actor. He got a great taste of suc cess in this field when he substituted for Frank Fay in “Harvey” two sea sons ago on Broadway. It -Keeps gnawing at him and he thinks it will go on gnawing until he finds the play he wants. •'I've tried two,” he says, “but they’ve been flops. The last one was ‘The Bench Warmer.’ I thought it was a nice solid part in a funny sort of comedy. I was even more con vinced of it when we opened in De troit to nice notices and a happy reception from the audience. We moved on to Chicago and much the same thing happened. Then, wc came into New York. That is where the critics cut our heads off. I read the first review in the first morn ing paper I could find. It should have depressed me, but it didn’t. I just thought the critic must be having an off night. When I read the others, I knew better.” * * * * His six weeks in "Harvey” will always be Bert's memory, not only because it was the finest part he1 ever has played, but because it en abled him to prove a point—at least | “Let's go to HUBBARD HOUSE!” \l NEW DOWNTOWN \ LOCATIONS ■ 1 1714 Eye St. N.W. 918 14th St. N.W. The picture is currently at the Co lumbia for its second F street rveek. partially—he raised in an argument with Frank Fay. “You know Frank?” he asks. “Then you know he is not exactly the most modest actor in the his tory of the theater. You have to argue back with Frank about a lot of things and when he started tell ing me how great he was as Elwood P. Dowd, we argued. I said that anybody could get the same number oi laughs in the part, that the audi ence was laughing while the star of the play was still in his dressing rom. “Playing it convinced me I was r'ght.” The little comedian who pleased the “Harvey” public and Producer Brock Pemberton so much was offered another chance at the role this summer. “I didn't do it.” he says, “because I would have had to follow Jimmy Stewart. If you’ve got any sense, you don't follow Jimmy Stewart.” This is a modest man, whose great enthusiasm ii> life is the styles of his great rivals, the other come dians who came up through Zieg feld. The best of the lot, in his opinion, was W. C. Fields, but he thinks Bobby Clark, Ed Wynn, Bert Lahr, and the others were extraor dinarily funny. He thinks the present crop of funny men would be more promising if it served an apprenticeship such as their elders did. • But there is one man who may be as funny as any of the old timers.” Bert says. "That’s Eddie Foy, jr. He’s great and will be greater. He's funny just walking down the street, "funnier than his old man who was a great friend of mine.” Two other extraordinary fellows in Bert's opinion, although both are outside of the great comedian tradi tion, are Hank Ladd and Paul Hart man. "They’re wonderful,” he says, “and so is Grace Hartman.” * * * * While he is waiting for that play for which he seems always to be waiting, Bert expects to have a happy time in vaudeville and in television. "What’s more.” he says, “I think 111 go back to London. Woolsey and I had a wonderful time there, and I was there again just before the war. Americans are going big over there. I'm an American and I like to go big.” Luxury for Lassie HOLLYWOOD.
