EM. 4949 Landlady Considers Appeal of $500 Fine In Eviction, Rerental Mrs. Doris R. Frankfurt, first landlady to be convicted here of evading the Rent Control Act by evicting a tenant on a false claim | she needed his apartment for her ;own use, today had the choice of paying a $500 fine or posting an ap peal bond in the same amount. Should the defendant fail to do either, she faces a 60-day jail term imposed by Judge John P. McMahon in Municipal Court, where prose cution started early last month. Counsel Weighs Action. On her conviction earlier this week, Defense Counsel Herman Miller asked a delay until 4 p.m. to day to decide on his next course of ; action. Principal witness for the District was R. A. Brantley., of the Rent Control Administrator's office, who testified the defendant lives in sec ond-floor rooms of an apartment house she owns in the 1500 block of Twenty-eighth place S.E. Mr. Brantley told the court, Mrs. j Frankfurt gained possession of a 1 first-floor apartment in eviction proceedings last April, when she said she needed those rooms for her | own use. Evicted were Mr. and Mrs. William J. McCarthy and their two children. Higher Rental Charged. The witness, under questioning by Assistant Corporation Counsel Clark King, added that later the same month Mrs. Frankfurt in stalled furniture and rented the quarters to Lt. Robert P. McMurty, j stationed at Andrews Field. In the! transaction she netted an extra $24: a month, Mr. King said. Mrs. Frankfurt defended her ac tion by testifying she originally planned to occupy the first-floor rooms but later changed her mind. Gadgets (Continued From Page B-l.l time we have storm sash on all windows. Can you advise? Answer: The trouble is due to dampnes in the wood, which breaks the bonds of the paint and darkens the varnish. I believe the cause is moist air of the house against the cold surfaces of the windows. A leaflet on condensation is being sent to you to enable you to trace the cause of the dampness in the ' air of your house. I also suggest that you examine the windows, in side and out, for leaks around the frames. Inside leaks can be closed with putty, and outside leaks with caulking compound, forced in with a caulking gun.' Portable-Electric Washer. A small, handy electrical washer which fits in with modern small space-living conditions has been recently marketed. Working on AC or DC, 110 volts, 60 cycles, it washes clothes without beating, wrenching or tearing. Nothing touches the clothes but air and water. Air suction from a powerful mo tor forces water and air bubles through the fabric 50 times a min ute. This manufactured»tide of aerated water rapidly surges up and down, and leaves every .fiber free of grime. The bubble action floods out ail flecks of soap and dirt, leaving the washing whiter. The aerated water gives clothes dried indoors a sweet, fresh, outdoor smell. The washers are manufactured in 2920 Greenvale Road Rollingwood—Chevy Chase, Md. $33/750--Accommodflting Terms Pleasing architecture—especially built for owner's home. Answer: Possibly the Home Craftsman Magazine, 115 Worth street, New York, or Popular Me chanics Press, 200 East Ontario street, Chicago, may have printed instructions on doing this work. Or you might inquire at your local public school. There may be a teacher of manual training who gives instructions in chair caning. Laying Linoleum. Question: I intend to lay a new kitchen linoleum soon, and would like to know if the joints should be cemented to the floor. Would you suggest laying it directly, over the old linoleum? I’ve heard of1 gome doing this. Will this be1 satisfactory? Answer: It is considered better to remove the old linoleum first in order to obtain a smoother job. However, in some cases, where the old linoleum has no worn places and lies smoothly on the floor, it is all right to put the new over the old. The linoleum is cemented all over, not just at the joints. A linoleum layer could do a good job for you, but it you must do the work yourself, get a handbook that explains the work and tells what tools to get.
