J., Sept. 11. —Beauties from the South, West and Midwest were prime favorites today to become the new Miss America. The field of 55 young women from 43 states, 0 cities, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Canada will be narrowed to 15 finalists by the judges today, and one of this group will be crowned beauty queen of the land some time late tonight. Preliminary rounds of the bathing suit, evening gown and talent show were concluded last nlgth with a “Carmen” from Montana and a gorgeous Georgian the respective talent and bathing suit winners. Patti Anne Luer, 18, from Ana conda, Mont., dressed in a flaming red Gypsy costume, won the talent division with a song and dance from “Carmen.” Miss Luer, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with light brown hair, has had voice instruction for three years. The bathing suit division went to Miss Atlanta. Jerry Lpng. Her vital statistics—34-inch bust, 24-inch waist, 36-inch hips, brown hair and hazel eyes. Miss Long credited her winning lines to plenty of sleep, exercise and a well-balanced diet. The Montana and Georgia girls and four other winners in Wednes day and Thursday night’s prelimi naries are the leading favorites for berths in the final field of 15. Three other probabilities for the finals are the winners of the evening gown division for eaoh night. These win ners. however, are not announced by the judges. The other preliminary winners were: • Bathing suit—Vera Ralston of Wichita, “Miss Kansas,” and Bea trice Shopp of Hopkins, “Miss Min nesota.” Talent—Dorothy Free of Chatta nooga, “Miss Tennessee,” and Mari lyn Robinson of Ogden, “Miss Utah.” Mrs. Barbara Walker Hummell, the beauteous Sunday school teach er from Tennessee who won last year's Miss America title, will place the crown on the head of the new queen in the climax of the five-day pageant. The 15 finalists share in the $25, 000 worth of scholarships, with first prize worth a $5,000 scholarship and also a $3,000 automobile. Davis today was charged with promoting (gambling as police probed further into a TNT explosion that wrecked (his car and home Wednesday. Davis and three others accused ; of the same offense were arrested yesterday when police raided what ; they described as a clearing house in Bedford Township. Adding machines, evidence show ing a day’s receipts of $2,400, and other paraphernalia were confis cated. Detective Lt. Martin P. Cooney reported.
