Was Busy as Robber Elsewhere, Alexandria Murder Suspect Says A suspect In the murder of Police Pvt. Robert A. Harris of Alexandria told police he could not have fired the fatal shot because at the time of the shooting early Saturday he was eight blocks away .robbing a gasoline station. James Joseph Earl Davis, 20, col ored, who said he lived in the 2100 block of P street N.W., was arrested the morning of the shooting and is one of 14 suspects in the murder still being held, according to In spector Russell Hawes. Inspector Hawes said Davis gave the robbery story as his alibi. Davis subsequently was charged with the gas station robbery because some of the 19 nickels taken from the gas station were found on him, police said. Inspector Hawes added, however. that Davis’ alibi did not clear him from suspicion in the murder be cause it could not be definitely es tablished what time he broke into the gas station. Another suspect is a colored man who police say tried to borrow money from his employer about 4 am. Saturday, barely an hour after the shooting. This man was caught trying to leave town after he was unable to borrow the money. The Alexandria City Council last Everything for Tour PET food s—t o r s TROPICAL FISH SCHMID'S, Inc. W.ib. Wallace Says Clark Should Help Get Ticket On Illinois Ballot &y the A$*ociat#d Pr»i» CHICAGO, Sept. 15.—Henry A. Wallace said yesterday that Attor ney General Clark should “take action” to put the Progressive Party ticket on the State ballot in Illinois, where final State rulings keep it off. Illinois Progressive leaders, mean while. are considering Federal Court appeals as a final legal effort to force printing of their State and national nominees on the November S State ballot. As a last resort, they plan an in tensive write-in campaign to win 500.000 to 750,000 votes they estimate they could poll if the election were held today. This would be an im portant 12 to 18 per cent of the 4,000,000 total votes cast in Illinois In 1944. The State Electoral Board recently ruled the Progressives off the ballot by deciding that their petitions were legally inadequate. It held the re quirement of a minimum of 200 valid signatures from each of at least 50 of the State s 102 counties was not fulfilled. The State Supreme Court yester day, an hour before Mr. Wallace cam* to Chicago for a campaign rally, refused without comment to review the board decision. As it now stands, only Cook County (Chi cago! Progressive nominees for county, congressional and legisla ture offices will be on the Cook County ballot. The ban on the Progressives; boosts Democratic State hopes, since the new party is generally regarded as likely to win most of its votes from the Democrats. A special detail of 350 policemen, ordered out by Democratic Mayor Martin H. Kennelly, guarded Mr. Wallace last night as he addressed 19.000 persons who paid from 60 cents to $2.40 to hear him at Wrig ley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. The crowd chipped in an an nounced total of more than $10,000 when the hat was passed. No dis orders were reported. Mr. Wallace and State party lead ers and nominees. In their speeches assailed the ballot ban as uncon stitutional and a denial of free elec tions. They said Illinois voters are being robbed of a free choice.
