'x Phone District 4200 _ All bus schedules operate on Eastern Standard Tipie \JFlying Boxcar" to Pick Up Glider At Bollina Base on Air Force Day A 4,500-pound glider will be j picked up and hauled through the air by a Fairchild C-82 Packet ] during Bolling Air Force Base's big Air Force Day celebration Satur day. •At Andrews Air Force Base, where another free show will be held similar aerial attractions and ground displays are scheduled. The Packet, or "Flying Boxcar,” wili come to Bolling from Green ville Air Force Base. Greenville, S. C„ especially for the demonstra tion, which is one of many spec tacular events the thousands of vis itors at the base will see without charge. They will note, in part anyway, how a bit of the air war was fought recently in this Nation’s struggle against the'Japs and Germans over the world. During the war, when the heavier C-82 was not in use, regular transport planes conducted tneir airborne glider missions in and over the rough mountainous wilderness of New Guinea and be hind German lines to evacuate wounded and pick up supplies. Advantages of Glider. The C*-47 transport glider to be pulled by the C-82 in the Bolling operation is exceptionally advan tageous in areas too small for take off by powered aircraft. If it has a cleared stretch of about 800 feet it can easily be carried aloft from small places. Weighing two and one-half tons, ■this glider has a wing span of 61 ifeet. In normal combat, it can carry a jeep and six men, or a 75-millimeter howitzer with a crew I of six or seven soldiers to man the gun when landed. It can haul 15 persons and a crew of two. Trained glider pilots and crews will be here with the C-47 glider which is from the 316th Troop Car rier Wing at Greenville. This unit has a distinguished war record. It participated in many major World War II battles, including campaigns in Libya and Tunisia, Sicily, Italy,] D day at Normandy, the airborne ! invasion of Holland, the re-suoply at Bastogne during the Battle of i the Bulge and the final Rhine Cross mg. 4-Ring "Flying Circus.1* Another new attraction announced for the big Bolling show, which wili run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., will be a four-ring "flying circus,’’ in which model airplane builders representing the Civil Air Patrol and the Bolling Bolsa Bugs will participate. Speedy flights by small jet-pow ered models as well as speed, stunt and formation flying will feature this special event by model plane flyers. Four large circles, 100 feet In di ameter, will be marked on the wide concrete parking areas between the base operations building and one of the hangars at the base. Within these circles the CAP boys and the 25 members of the Bolling Balsa Bugs’ Club will display their con structive ability and explain to the thousands of spectators the intri cacles of building the little air planes. Other Attractions Set. Many other attractions are set for the Bolling show. A big B-36 alx-f engined bomber, largest type in the; world, will fly over shortly after noon. Just before that, two Super Portresses will arrive after a non stop 4,219-mile flight from Germany Paratroopers will '’invade'’ Bolling, as bombers fly over the District Air National Guard fighters will take the defensive role. Jet planes will roar over the field, a pilotless plane will arrive after a 1,000 mile flight, the latest in photo reconnaissance equipment will be shown, a turbojet engine will be in operation, buzz bombs and guided missiles will be on display, commercial airliners will be open for Inspection and dozens of other attractions have been lined up by Maj. Gen. B. M. Hovey, com manding general, and his staff. Parking accommodations for 25.000 autos will be free, and there will be no admission charge to the show. At the Andrews Air Force Base "open house,” which will run from 10 a m. to 6 p.m., visitors will see spectacular and varied air and ground demonstrations involving the latest Air Force planes, such as the F-80 “Shooting Star," the F-84 “Thunderjet” and other front-line fighters. Also on display will be the F-82 “Twin-Mustang” and the C-82 “Cargomaster.” The F-80s will open the air show at Andrews with a mass formation ♦light over the field, followed by a B-29 and a B-50. A 20-plane for mation of T-6s and T-lls will follow, immediately preceding a demonstra tion of Ground Controlled Approach Operation.
