Hitchcock Pulls His Cwn Stunt In Tale of Murder as a Stunt t By Jay Carmody. Alfred Hitchcock, master-mind of murder in the movies, is an artist with much of the scientist’s temperament. He like* to tinker with basic formulas, especially his own. Tinker he does in “Rope,” the latest Hitchcock thriller which opened yesterday at the Warner. The resultant study of high class homicide is revolutionary, which, spectacular though the word may sound, does not mean max, nope is nucncocss best screenplay. It is merely a good enough melodrama which nevertheless suggests that it might have been better if the director had been lees interested in method, or technique, and more interested in etory material. Any Hitchcock, of course, is rec ommendable and this is certainly true of "Rope” whose corking cast is headed by James Stewart. John Dali, Parley Grainger and Sir Cedric Hardwicke. * * * * "Rope” which is shot in a straight chronological line, as if it were a stage play, is of much the same; dimensions as the latter. That is to say, its continous action is j limited to a New York apartment, and almost entirely to the living room of that establishment. The famous Leopold-Loeb case of the ’20s is the obvious inspiration of the Patrick Hamilton play, of which Hitchcoc% screen drama is and adaptation. It starts at a level of suspense that is remarkably high and climbs rather constantly with only enough changes in mood to keep the maximum tension bearable. Like the Chicago thrill killers, "Rope's” murderous pair fancy themselves above the moral law which governs average humans. In ! the lavender intellectual world they j have created for themselves, mur- j der is a permissible exercise of su periority. It represents an exciting test not merely of their wits, but of i their exemption from the conscience ' of mere mortals. The murder they commit is a kind of esthetic feat. Its victim is a j mutual friend, a school days’ com- ( EVENING PARKING 40® CAPITAL GARAGE 1320 N. Y. Ave. N.W. Strangling an old, un suspecting friend is exciting, but not sufficiently so. They have timed it exquisitely to tiring it off just be fore a cocktail party to which they have invited the dead boy’s doting parents. The filip in this is that the corpse shall be concealed in a living room chest from which the buffet is served to the guests. Macabre, hunh? * * * * It takes Hitchcock but a minute to set this grisly stage which is lighted immediately thereafter by a brilliant picture window which looks out on New York's jeweled skyline at sunset. The blemish on the perfection of the murder is quickly revealed. It lies in the differing degrees of ego in the killers, played by Dali and Granger. The crime is the ex hilerating thing Dali expected. It strengthens his superman convic tion. Not so in the case of his com panion. The remnant of conscience n him gives him a severe case of ;he jitters which, as the party goes pn. exposes him to the suspicions of i former schoolmaster (Stewart), me of the party guests. As Hitchcock’s cat in the subse quent game of cat-and-mouse, Stewart is no spotless hero. As the former teacher of the precocious killers, it was he who first planted in their minds the amoral fancies, which became the motive of their crime. He is in a sense guilty with hem, but he also is ideally equipped for the attendant duel of wits which will expose the pair or put the stamp of final perfection upon their crime. Hitchcock is not really concerned to conceal that his climax will be exposure of the crime. He is con tent rather to build his suspense around just how and when this will be accomplished. J * * * Hitchcock's stunt in “Rope” de mands of the performers a finer textured acting than is encountered in even the better screen melo dramas. It asks continuous charac. ter creation from the inside out and it must have been as exhausting to the players as it is rewarding to audiences. Most varied portrait among the principal trio, master and pupils, is that of Stewart, an intellectual COMING ATTRACTION — Michel Simon plays the title role in “The King’s Jester” lohich features music from Verdi’s opera, “Rigoletto,” sung by Ferruccio Tagliavini. The Italian film is next at the Dupont. hedonist who discovers that young minds are hideously vulnerable to amoral suggestion. Dali is equally effective in his satanic representa tion of the dominant murderer and Granger, as his weak-souled com panion, is never less than convinc ing. Hitchcock quality acting is deliv ered also by those in lesser roles: Joan Chandler, a newcomer; Con stance Collier, Sir Cedric, and Edith Evanson as the loquacious maid. Murder as a double rich stunt, once by the precocious boys in the story, once by Hitchcock, is some thing you had better see. Even if it is not the master’s best. San Francisco Gets A New Night Spot HOLLYWOOD. Californians familiar with San Francisco’s historic landmarks will be startled to find a new building at Powell and Market streets when they see RKO Radio’s "Race Street.” Movie technicians converted the old Bay City Market, for years at this location, into a swanky night spot known as “Billy's Tavern.” completely covering it with a new front, electric signs, entrances and awnings. Much of the film’s action was shot there. Starred in “Race Street” are George Raft, William Bendlx and Marilyn Maxwell. v Seasnakes Not Fatal Weather men stationed on Willis island, off Australia, have discovered that for the last year they have been eating poisonous seasnakes in the belief that they were eels— but all the weather men survived. Nor were gun play and poker the only games they knew. m In the same saloons where this type drank and in the mountain passes where it murdered and pil laged, there were tough, decent, witty men who were a match for anybody without drawing a gun. This pleasant intelligence is dis closed in “Four Faces West,” new film feature at the Metropolitan which is so much the dramatic superior of most westerns that smart producers henceforth will throw their six-guns into the Pa cific. Oddly enough, Harry Sherman whose actors have used up enough ammunition to win a half a dozen small revolutions, is the producer of “Four Faces West.” Through happy circumstance, however, he ran across Eugene Manlove Rhodes’ novel, “Paso Por Aqui” (Those Who Pass This Way). It gave him a narrative in which character is the dominant element, and one which makes a quite agreeable screenplay. Joel McCrea's is the top face among the four in the picture’s title. Behind it lurks a nature bold, daring, resourceful and brave enough even to be tender when the occasion demands. He enters the picture amiably holding up a bank, but with the difference that he leaves an IOU signed "Jefferson Pa vis.” The other faces become quickly involved in his life. One is that of Frances Dee, a nurse who falls in love with him but wishes she knew more about him. Another is that of Charles Bickford, as a progres sive, altruistic, philosophic United States Marshal who has to start hunting down all bandits, even the more decent. Hie final face belongs to Joseph Calleia who enters the dramatic tangle as a wise Mexican gambling house proprietor who knows a moral bandit when he sees one, and who has a vast admiration for the type. There is not much incident in “Four Faces West,” not enough to keep it entirely from representing another six-reel horseback ride, but everybody is so agreeable and charming that one can’t help lik ing them all. Moreover, all are suf ficiently given to drollery that you feel the old West has been maligned by that excess of gunplay in those Randolph Scott things. —J. C. Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters On Palace Screen ‘■ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN.” a Universal-Interna tional Picture, produced by Robert Arthur, directed by Charles T. The Palace attraction, perhaps, represents a dilution of both screen “art" forms. To that extent, it may prove a less satisfying offering than usual to devotees of the slim and stocky funsters. Abbott and Costello prevail, how ever, over the chilly doings of such competent scare artists as Bela Lu gosi and Lon Chaney—he who for merly appended a “Jr.” The horror complement also includes Glenn Strange as the Frankenstein mon ster. This is a story of little moment and careful balance. Abbott and Costello are their familiar selves, but the gruesome counters the laughter. This perhaps, makes the film less a fitting display of the duo’s slapstick than devotees might wish. There is no mistaking, how ever, that it is a Lou and Bud ver sion of what might make people laugh. The film remains a comedy, de spite the effective shiver shenani AMUSEMENTS. “House On A 92nd Street”, Wil- r~Tm 'M ■fliam Eythe, Lloyd Nolan, I US m ■ Sirne Hatso. Open 7:30 I « I B P.M.
