Big Delegation to Attend Lutheran Convention A large delegation of Washington Lutherans is expected to attend the 16tn biennial convention of the ; United Lutheran Church In Amer ica in Philadelphia from October 6 to 14. Nearly 600 delegates from every State. Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands will be on hand. The delegates will also include some representing the mission fields of Argentina, British Guiana, China, India, Japan and Liberia. The Rev. Franklin Clark Fry of 'New Rochelle, N. Y., is president of the group. The church, largest of ! the Lutheran bodies in the coun try, has a membership of 1,880,628. I Dr. Oscar F. Blackwelder of ! Two Test Pilots Killed As Explosion Shatters Big All-Jet Bomber By the Associated Press TULARE, Calif., Sept. 21.—One of the Nation's first all-jet bombers lies in shattered wreckage strewn oyer Central California farmland, the two civilian test pilots aboard it dead. • An explosion heard for miles blew the North American B-45, four-jet, 500-mile-an-hour plane to pieces yesterday while it was flying 8,000 to 10,000 feet over Alpaugh, 20 miles south of here. < Parts of the plane—big as the wartime B-17 Flying Fortress—fell over an area 4 mills square. The B-45 was oh a flight from Muroc (Calif.) Air Base. 194 of Planes Ordered. North American Aviation, Inc., which has Air Force orders for 190 of the planes, first of its type, identi fied the dead as: • George W. Krebs, 30, Los Angeles. He was project piloj and was at the controls. Mr. Krebs was the first man to fly a multiple jet bomber. He was the son of W. J. Krebs, Kansas City advertising man, and also is survived by his widow, Alice, and two children. Nicholas G. Pickard, 31. Man hattan Beach, Calif., test pilot. He was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and is survived by his widow, Kathleen, and two children. An eyewitness, William McAfee, former Air Force pilot who was at an airfield 10 miles away, said he noticed the plane’s motors sounded peculiar and that it was trailing gray smoke. Heard Another Explosion. “It was making pretty good time with the smoke getting thicker. I lost it in the sun, then I heard a terrific roar," Mr. McAfee said. "I saw parts of the plane dfctintegrate. I watched the parts float downward, then seconds later there was another loud explosion.” A Nprth American spokesman said the company could not comment on possible causes of the disaster pend ing an investigation. Capt. Fitz-Gerald Dies; Flew Faster Than Sound VAN NUYS, Calif., Sept. 21 (A*).— Air Force Capt. James P. Fitz Gerald, 28, one of the few men to Capt. Fiti-Gerald. fly faster than the speed of sound, is dead. Injuries suf fered when his TF-80 jet plane crashed Septem ber 9 near Van Nuys airport on a flight from Muroc Air Base caused his death yesterday at Bir mingham Veter ans’ Hospital.'He had been uncon scious since the crash. Gen, Hoyt S. vandenberg or the Air Force said last June that Capt. Fitz-Gerald and four others had penetrated the sonic barrier during test flights of the XS-1, experi mental rocket plane. Presumably Capt. Fitz - Gerald flew faster than 760 miles an hour, the approximate speed of sound at air temperature of 59 degrees. The world air speed record established last week at Muroc by Maj. Richard L. Johnson in an Aif Force F-86 jet fighter is 670.981 miles an hour. Capt. Fitz-Gerald, born in South Pittsburg, Tenn.. was graduated from West Point in 1943 and served with the 8th Air Force in England during the war. His widow and one child survive. Cepyntht 190, Contumml Oil Company 12 Killed and 5 Injured In Indiana Truck Crash ly th« Associated Press LAPORTE, Ind., Sept. 21—Eleven onion field workers and a freight truck driver were killed and five others were injured when an open truck in which they were riding collided with a semitrailer during a heavy rain storm. The dead included two brothers and a father and his two sons. All were employed by the L. Donchin growers of near North Jtidson and were on their way home from the fields when the accident occurred. The dead and injured were scat tered along Route 35, 13 miles south of here. The workers’ truck, a one ton vehicle, was battered into a mass of twisted metal on the front and side but remained upright.
