McWilliams: I am a teacher and am unable to explain to my class the correct pronunciation of the Norwegian word fjord. Will you please make it clear for my stu dents?—W. P. B. Answer—First, I recommend the customary English spelling: fiord. To pronounce it correctly, remember that the "i” (also the “J” of fjord) has the sound of the consonant "y” as in yes, your. The “o" is either “oh” or "aw.” First choice: fyohrd; second choice: fyawrd. Omaha: Here is a clipping which states that the word skiing is cor rectly pronounced "shee-ing.” What do you say?—W. T. Answer—The word ski, in Norwe gian and Swedish is pronounced "shee.” But the word has long been established in British and American English, in which "k” never has the sound oi "h.” The standard Ameri can pronunciation, "of course, is: skee. And skiing is: skee-ing. St. Paul: Some political speaker or other (I forget which one) has been referring constantly to the Berlin crisis as "it is a kry-seez that • • *” Can't you make him stop It?—Mrs. L. W. B. Answer—Political speaker, stop saying "kry-seez” for crisis. The word crisis is singular, and the correct pronunciation Is: KRY-siss. Now, if there'is more than one crisis, you may use the plural form crises, and pronounce it: KRY-seez. But to say “KRY-seez” for the singular word crisis is as absurd as Fulton Lewis’s “PREM-i-seez" for the word prem ises. Program note — Henry Wallace does not say "pro-gr’m.” He cor rectly pronounces the -gram as In monogram and diagram. Alexandria: At my Masonic lodge, the word demit (a transfer from one lodge to another) is pronounced “DEM-it.” Is that correct?—W. B. C. Answer—Sorry, no. The verb is: dee-MIT. The noun is ^dee-MIT; but there is an increasing tendency to pronounce the noun as: DEE-mit. This follows a well established pat tern in American English as seen in such words as PER-mit, noun; per MIT, verb; CON-tract, noun; con TRACT. verb;- PRES-ent, noun; pre-SENT, verb, etc. Mrs. H. D. At every reasonable opportunity it has been our policy to stress tha principle that every high card is not the equal of every other card of the same denomination. The honor trick table may tell us that a king Is worth one-half a trick and on the average the table will be right. But on a particular hand we, who have listened to the bidding, may come to the conclusion that a certain king, far from being worth a half trick. Is absolutely useless be cause partner may have shown that he has a singleton or a void of that suit. Then, too, we may decide that a certain king has become just so much ballast by reason of the fact that our left-hand adversary has bid the suit very strongly and that the [ chances of winning a trick with that card are extremely remote. On the other hand, the value of a half trick assigned to a king may be grossly inadequate when we realize that the king in question is sure to win a trick. The assurance may come from the fact that part ner bid that suit or indicated that he had the ace to match it. When North picked up his hand he saw only one and a half honor tricks and had nothing to cheer about, since, if fate were unkind, his hand might produce no tricks, but as the bidding developed he learned that he had the equal of three aces, to say nothing of the doubleton diamond and the fourth trump. On the third round of bid ding it became apparent that he had an enormous hand. To the opening bid of one spade North could do no more than give a single raise. To be sure, it was a very comfortable raise and with it was held out the wish that partner would speak again. But if partner's hand were such that he could take no further action there was no good chance for game. South, of course, immediately realized that there was a game in the hand, but if North happened to have a maximum raise and in the right places there might even be a slam. If North’s values happened to be in hearts there would be no hope, but if they hap pened to be in the minor suits pros perity might be just around the cor ner. At any rate, there was no harm in bidding three diamonds, which was a one-round force. North now indicated that he had a good raise by going to four spades. It now appeared to South that | five was safe, so he made one more try by showing the ace of clubs: You see what this did to North’s hand: It converted every one of his honor cards to the equivalent of an ace. He was inclined to bid the slam himself, because it was incon ceivable that South could do all this bidding with two losing hearts. However, he decided to show the king of diamonds and South him self took the leap, feeling that at worst the slam would depend on some sort of finesse in the diamond suit. Actually it tomed out to be a laydown. (Copyright. 1848. by Charles H. Gores) Nature s Children By Lillian Cox Athey Fishing is the national occupation of Greenland. One hundred speciea of fish are found in the waters. Ten species of whalebone whale and a large walrus colony may be met in Greenland waters. Only at a few places in the world is there any parallel of a single animal supporting and Influencing the whole life of a people as is true of Greenland with the seals and cod. The five species of seals am resi dent only to a slight extent in waters around Greenland. The in creasing systematic hunting of them in their breeding grounds has had a marked effect on the num bers which migrate to within reach of Greenland. The small herring like fish, known as the caplin and called by Greenlanders “angmags sat,” is of the greatest importance to them. The fish penetrate the fjords in vast numbers. Tons of them are caught and dried for the winter for human and dog food. Those too old to hunt seals in a kayak are willing to fish for cod. After 20 years of rapid develop ment cod fishing is th£ great na tional occupation Chaar is found in the fresh water. Thousands fish for them through the summer, when the fish migrate along the rivers to and from the lakes. Other fish caught are hali but, Greenland or blue, sea scorpion,, lump sucker and Norway haddock. The largest sea fish is the Green land shark, which is caught for its liver. It is so abnormally large it yields much oil, which is extracted by a special melting process. The wealth of marine animal life makes Greenland habitable. The 10 species of whalebone whales move up and down the coast. The gladia tor whale, a most voracious animal, is hunted with great zest. This whale appears to concentrate on the small species of whales, the white and narwhal, who travel in large schools. Hie larger whales are caught by the Greenlanders in a special whaling ship under gov ernment direction. Hardy fishermen find that fish ing in Greenland is very exciting. More are favoring this spot an nually. *2 for your idtat w» print. Writ* Jirry Lanjttl t'o Th« Evening Star APiNT&ze> w.eUTT^ STmALL CiQAJZ&VTSS...
