Wins 2 Maryland
Journalism Awards
The Easterner, student publication
at Eastern High School, and one
of Its staff members were among
top winners yesterday at the Mary
land Scholastic Press Association
conference at the University of
Maryland.
The publication was adjudged the
best monthly paper represented at
the meeting. In addition. Eastern
students competing in a newspaper
writing tournament, compiled 30
points to win the MSPA loving cup,
a rotating trophy presented to the
publication attaining the highest
score.
One Eastern student. Bob Gray,
16. of 1215 Raum street N.E., took
first place in sports writing.
Baltimore Gets Award.
The Patterson Press of Patterson
Park High School, Baltimore, was
adjudged the best weekly paper in
Maryland and the District of Co
lumbia. Best of the bi-weekly papers
was the Alcohi Mirror of Allegany
High School. Cumberland, St, Jos
eph's High School, Baltimore, was
adjudged the best year book.
Eugene Henry. 15, of 1650 North
Edison street, Arlington, a member
of the staff of Sabre, publication of
St, John's High; School, Washing
ton, was first in news writing and
Anne Rideout. 16, representing the
Annapolis High School Tally-Ho.!
■was first in editorial writing. The
■best interview story was written by
: Ellen Sincroff, 15 of 5500 MacArthur
boulevard N.W. a staff member of
Western Breeze, student paper at
Western High School.
St. John's High School and the
Annapolis High School were tied for
second place with 20 points each in
the writing tournament, while West
! ern High School finished fourth with
! 16 points.
Hugh F. Neason Gets
Lafayette Hotel Post
Hugh F. Neason has been ap
pointed manager of the Lafayette
Hotel, G. H. Parrish, president and
general manager of Hotel Enter
prises here, announced yesterday.
Mr. Neason assumed his new post
November 1.
Mr. Neason, until recently man
ager of the Pierrepont Hotel, Brook
lyn, at one time served as manager
of the Hamilton. Annapolis and
Burlington hotels in Washington.
Emigration to Latin America
Opposed by White Russia

PARIS, Nov. 6.—White Russia
today opposed Latin American,
efforts to open the door for Euro
pean emigration to the new world.
Ecuador, Columbia and Peru have
proposed to the Joint Economic and
Social Committee of the United
i Nations General Assembly that
resolutions be adooted aimed at
opening up under-developed areas
of Latin America and providing
homes for "surplus" European pop
ulations.

in Europe, but on the contrary a
shortage of manpower.” he said.
The committee postponed action
on the resolutions until next week.

Vote Canvess Gives G. 0. P.
Control of Delaware House

WILMINGTON, Del., Nov. 6.—A
canvass of votes today gave the
Republicans—and not the Demo
crats—control of the Delaware House
of Representatives.
An error was detected in the un
official returns from the First Dis
trict in /Sussex County, where Wil
liam Morgan, jr„ was reported the
winner over Clifford J. Donovan.
Republican. The unofficial vote was
Mr. Morgan 1,425 and Mr. Donovan
1,349.
The official returns reversed the
vote and made Mr. Donovan the
winner.
This gave the Republicans an
18 to 17 edge in the Hbuse. They
also control the Senate, nine to
eight, although Delaware elected
a Democratic Governor and Sen
ator^_
