Patriarch of Moscow Charges Vatican Agent Killed Church Official > By the Associated Press MOSCOW, Jan. 8—The journal | ©f the Moscow patriarch said today, an “agent of the Vatican” assassi nated Dr. Lvov O. Gavriil Kostelnik, protopresbyter of the Russian Or thodox Church, last fall. The accusation was contained in a brief statement signed by a mem ber of the Holy Synod, Nikolai,: Metropolitan of Krutitski and Ko lonna. The statement said Dr. Kostelnik was killed near his home on September 20. Patriarch Alexei of Moscow and all Russia made a similar charge in a statement dated September 21, the publication said. His statement was not published until today. Orders Laid to Vatican. The patriarch was quoted as say ing that the assassin was “one of humanity’s degenerates, a member of the Ukrainian bourgeois nation alist underground, who without doubt acted at the orders of the Vatican.” (Unofficial but informed Vati can sources flatly denied the Rus sian charge last night.) Dr. Kostelnik was a leader in the movement which resulted in the Uniat Church of the Western Ukraine severing its 350-year-old ties with the Roman Catholic Church and becoming part of the Orthodox Church. That action was taken in March. 1946. Account of Shooting Given. Another article in the journal said the assasin shot himself when he saw it was impossible to escape The journal gave this account of the shooting: Dr. Kostelnik was shot twice through the head. The assassin ap proached him from the rear. The shooting occurred as the proto presbyter neared his home after having officiated at religious services. Dr. Kostelnik’s assassination was announced last September \jn the newspaper Ukrainian Pravda, but no details were given. The ac count published today mentioned for the first time that the Vatican had been accused of complicity. In April, 1946, the Moscow radio quoted Dr. Kostelnik and two other leaders of the Uniat church as ac cusing the Vatican of a “lust for power and satanic pride.'’ The broadcast said the three churchmen denied Vatican state ments that the Uniat assembly which voted for the break with Rome lacked authority to take such action. At the time, the sacred congre gatoin of the Oriental church at the Vatican said the Assembly “prob ably was headed by a few apostate priests.” Russian Accusation Denied Flatly by Vatican Sources By th* Associated Press VATICAN CITY, Jan. 8.—Unof flcial but informed Vatican sources flatly denied tonight a Russian charge that a Vatican agent had assassinated Dr. Lvov. O. Gavril Kostelnik, protopresbyter of the, Russian Orthodox Church, last fall. The charge was interpreted by these informants as Communist propaganda. “It is observed first of all,” the sources said, “that the accusation is not at all precise. The name of the alleged Ukrainian murderer, is not given. “It would be better to explain today's accusations—founded on a deed of some months ago—by the desire of Communist circles to smother in any manner the wave of indignation which has spread around the world since the arrest of Josef Cardinal Mindszenty (pri mate of Hungary.)” Bevin, Schuman Meet Wednesday to Settle Policy Differences By the Associated Press LONDON, Jan. 8—Britain and France will have a "peace confer ence” of their own Wednesday. They are West Europe’s main partners in trying to achieve pros perity, political unity and military security for the continent, and in the fight to beat back Communism. But their statesmen are worried because their policies clash at many points and levels throughout the world. In an effort to straighten out their difficulties, France's foreign Minister Robert Schuman will ar rive Wednesday to talk it all over with Foreign Secretary Bevin in a two-day meeting. Mr. Schuman, Mr. Bevin and their advisers plan to go over the whole field of international affairs. Parliament Top Subject. British and French officials ex pect them to dwell mainly on whether to set up a parliament of Europe for Western anti-Communist governments, and on Germany’s political future. These other issues also will come up: The future of Italy’s pre-war African colonies. The North Atlantic security pact. Recognition of Israel and its ad mission into the United Nations. Co-ordination of French and British colonial policies in the Far East And Africa. Britain and France have distinctly different designs by which they believe Europe should develop po litical unity. France is pressing Britain to ac cept a long-time plan for creating a parliament of Europe. The French believe it would provide a positive, dynamic alternative to what Com munism offers. Britain frankly does not like the idea. The French have mustered strong backing for their project. The United States has said it thinks a European parliament would be a fine thing. Belgium supports it. Italy does, too. So do several other politically important countries. Won’t Give Up Sovereignty. Mr. Bevin and his advisers don’t like the idea that Britain, under that plan, might have to yield some sov ereignty to a new and possibly tenu ous authority. Look at other experiments of that bind—the League of Nations, for instance, or even the United Nations —they tell France. Over and over the British stress I they don’t want to go into some ! thing that might turn out to be just another talk fest. Mr. Bevin has suggested an alter ; native. He said to the French, Dutch, Belgians and Luxembourgers: l How about setting up a European ministerial council, a body with de It's the Famous Haircut that Started the Trend to Short Hair!
