TN THE 1919-20 period im mediately following World War I, milady really started to assert herself. She began shoddlng her feet ("tootsies” or ‘'doggies,” in the slan guage of the period) with spike-heeled “pumps,” instead of the more copservative, prim — and comfortable — high-button shoes. It was the beginning of the great fem inine infiltration into thor oughly masculine sanctum sanctorums. And in 1921 Rudolph Valen tino was entrancing bobby - soxless bobby - sockers. not with Bing Crosbylsh groaning but with his attractive phy sique, graceful dancing and ardent love-making In the movies. Flimsy as this craft appears, it made the first air crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in May, 1919. It was the Navy's NC-4.
