Started in Georgia in 1915, the Ku Klux Klan spread widely and was
variously, anti-Negro, anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish. Above: Members

Actresses joined in the 1919 strike wave in an action which closed
nearly a dozen New York theaters.
A group of prominent Democrats of the time. Left to right: Mrs. Alfred
E. Smith and her husband, then New York's Governor; Homer S: Cummings
later Attorney General; William Gibbs McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury'
and Mrs. McAdoo; Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy; Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, defeated candidate for Vice President
in 1920.
The successful vice presidential candidate, Calvin Coolidge (center)'
with his wife, sons and father, Col. John Coolidge, who administered the
oath when Mr. Coolidge succeeded to the presidency.
An ugly series of race riots marred 1919. One of these occurred in Chicago when
a 17-year-old colored youth drowned in Lake Michigan and many thought he had been
Stoned by white persons while in the water. Here, a mixed crowd is shown leaving the
^each as the fighting got under way.
There was moaning and
groaning over Czechoslo
vakia’s (ate then. Just as
there has been in the last two
or three years.
Strikes, prejudices, cockeyed
philosophies, uprisings, ten
sions. strained relations,
threats, high rents—all have
a familiar ring; in (act, are
almost exact echoes of the
post-1918 era.
The voters in the 1920 elec
«
tlon had to weather the same
long-winded political oratory
as the voters of 1948. And, as
always, many of the prom
ises were forgotten as soon as
the balloting was over.
Even the constabulary of
staid old Boston kicked up a
fuss In September, 1919, and
walked out on strike. And
what happened? We got Cal
vin Coolidge as President.
On September 16, 1920, just
when Wall Street was sweat
ing out its mere seventh mil
lion for the day, some culprit
set off an explosion. It killed
30 people and Injured hun
dreds. The anarchists were
blamed, whoever they were.
Somebody had to be blamed,
even though the mystery of
the blast was never solved.
The House of Morgan is still
pock-marked with scars of
the flying fragments.
