When Ed Macauley was a kid, he worried
about his height — but not any more

Easy Ed Macauley. St. Louis
University basketball star, is
so tall he has to sleep with his
knees doubled up when his team
is on the road. He won’t fit in a
Pullman berth. In hotels he gets
a Hollywood-type bed so his feet
can dangle over the end.
Macauley was the Helms Ath
letic Foundation’s “Player of the
Year” last season. He is six feet
eight and weighs only 174 pounds.
This frail build makes his rise to
the top of a rough, bruising sport
an athletic mystery. He looks as if
he might break in half any minute.
His coach, Edgar Hickey, offers
perhaps the best explanation why
the All-American center doesn't.
‘They don't call him Easy Ed
for nothing.” says Hickey. ‘‘His
unusual muscular co-ordination
and rhythm more than make up
for his lack of heft. I have never
seen a smoother player. He han
dles a basketball as gracefully
