Britain May Be Jolted
By Report on Slump
In Dollar Reserves
It t** Aum*'N *****
LONDON, June JO —Britons may
get a Jolt next weex when their,
financial chief Sir Stafford Cripps
tells them how far Britain s go.d
and dollar reserves have sunk :n
the last three months Estimates
place the decline at *160 000 000 to
*200 000 000.
American Treasury Secretary
Snyder is expected to confer next
week with Cripps and Prime Min
ister Attlee on Britain s monetary
plight
Elsewhere vital talks are going
on. or being scheduled between
high Western economic leaders
Policies Debated.
In Paris the "cabinet of the 19
nation Organization for European
Economic Co-operation, is debat
ing on the immediate future of
Western Europe s financial and
trading policies.
Sir Oliver Franks Britain s Am
bassador to the United States, has
been told to speed a scheduled trip
home for talks with Foreign Sec
retary Bevm and Cripps on the
overall economic situation.
The British government has
called on seven Commonwealth
governments and Southern Rho
desia to' send finance ministers to
London by mid-July to study the
situation brought about by the
sinking dollar resources of the
whole sterling area.
An official source took a grave
view of the British economic pic
ture.
Britain's reserves stood * little
I under the £500,000.000 t»2 000 -
000.000) government-set danger
line at the turn of the year In
the first quarter they sagged by
£20.000,000.
Position “Not Good.”
The source said: ‘The govern
ment was not much worried by
that drop. It is, though, very con
cerned at the decline shown in
the second three months of the
year. The position today is not
good."
Meanwhile. Mr. Attlee has or
dered his labor and transport mln«
isters to speed plans to cope with
a threatened slowdown of the
nation's railway system.
The nearly 500.000-strong Na
tional Union of Rallwaymen an
nounced it will begin a slowdown
policy on t*ie country s overworked
rail system Monday until its claim
i for a 10-shilling i»2> pay increase
for 150,000 lower-grade workers
i is met.
An official said Mr. Attlee and
his ministers have two possible
'courses if a showdown comes: Be
gin using troops in railroad op
erations, or proclaim a state of
national emergency.
