Slot Machine Action
In Prince Georges
Rests With Police
Slot machine agitation in
Prince Georges County subsided
today as it became clear that
future developments depend on
action of the police.
In pursuing a hands-off policy
the county commissioners have
left to Police Chief Ralph W.
Brown the decision whether to
prosecute operators who pay off
on slot machine winnings.
Under a Circuit Court order the
commissioners are restrained from
licensing slot and pinball machines
for cash payoffs, although legal
ization was approved by voters in
a June 2 referendum. Judge
Charles C. Mar bury held that the
law under which the vote was
taken, is unconstitutional.
760 Machines Operating.
Tavern keepers have estimated
that at least 700 machines are
operated in the county. As amuse
ment devices they are legal but
Commissioner T. Hammond Welsh
charged that operators are mak
ing illegal payments to winning
players He tried unsuccessfully
to get the Board of County Com
mission* rs to instruct Chief Brown
to wage a campaign against the
business.
The board said no special action
was required since the police are
supposed to enforce all laws
Some officials have expressed
belief that the number of ma
chines will increase new ones
having been brought in in antici
pation of the legalized payoff
Judge Mar bury s ruling on the
Prince Georges law has cast
doubt on legality of slot machine
statutes In other counties but one
of these—Charles—is readv to
legalize payoffs starting tomor
row.
