Gloves, First Floor 3 Washington Writers Among 12 Winners of Nieman Fellowships ly Associated Press CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 5.— Twelve newspapermen, Including two city editors, were announced today as recipients of Nieman fellowships by the Nieman Founda tion at Harvard University. The group also includes an edi torial writer, two political writers, a copy desk chief, two feature writers% two Washington Bureau members and two city staff re porters. They were selected by a coni mitt.ee of three newspapermen and three university officials. The fel lowships provide a year of stpdy at Harvard. The foundation was established in 1938 under the will of Agnes Wahl Nieman, widow of Lucius W. Nieman, founder of the Milwaukee Journal. The new fellows are; Robert H. Fleming. 37. political writer, Milwaukee Journal; Wil liam German, 30, copy desk chief, • San Francisco Chronicle; Donald J. Gonzales. 32. diplomatic reporter for the United Press in Washing ton and Lake Success: Hays Gorey, 28. city editor. Salt Lake City Tribune; Max R. Res ton, diplomatic correspondent, New York Times; John* McL. Clark, Claremont <N. H.) Daily Eagle publisher; David W. Bailey, secretary of the Harvard Corp.; William M. Pinkerton, director of the Harvard News office, and Louis M. Lyons. Nieman Foundation curator. Mr. Fleming is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He was a reported fog 12 years on the Madison (Wis.) Capital-Times be fore serving three years in the Army. He joined the Milwaukee Journal staff in 1948. He plans to study Government and United States political movements. Mr. Gonzales is a graduate of the University of Nebraska. He worked for a year on the Nebraska State Journal before joining.the United Press in 1939. He served three years with the Army Air Forces. He plans to study inter national relations, political and economic. Mr. Hall is a graduate of Emory University. In 1932, he began as a sports writer on the Atlanta Georgian and later worked on the New York Mirror before joining the Associated Press staff in Washington in 1942. Since 1945, Mr. Hall has specialized on Na tional labor news. He plans to study American history and labor management - Government reli tions. Mr. Marder began as a copy boy on the old Philadelphia Ledger in 1936 and served as reporter, night city editor and assistant day city editor. In 1941 he became a Ma rine Corps combat correspondent. He joined the Washington Post in 1946. He plans to study European politics and economics. A laboring man is said to de velop one horsepower of work in an eight-hour day.
