If it's any comfort, the heat, has one advantage—it's good for singers. Eleanor Steber, soprano, and Leonard Warren, baritone, both of the Metropolitan Opera Co.,' who will bring grand opera to the National Symphony Orches tras last Watergate concert of the season at 8:30 o'clock tonight, agreed in an interview yesterday that "heat oils the voice.” “One may feel more physically' uncomfortable," Miss Steber said, "but from a practical standpoint and from experience, I feel more freedom in the heat—more fluid ity of voice.” "Even doctors will tell you that cool air causes a contraction of the throat,” Mr. Warren added.: “Hot air is better.” Miss Steber explained that to night's program is an attempt to bring a large part of an opera to the audience, rather than the stock "sweetheart duet” type of numbers. Mr. Warren, a native New Yorker, who sang at a Daughters of the American Revolution na tional convention here early in his career, stated that, "although there's not a complete cast, the audience can get the dramatic quality of an opera.” Both singers pointed out this type of program goes over well in small cities, where there are no proper facilities for full oper atic production. ‘‘And in Washington,” Mr. War ren emphasized. ‘‘Goodness, I do think Washing ton should have an opera house,” Miss Steber declared. Mrs. Agatha Warren, who ac companied her husband here, took up the theme: ‘‘Why, all the major capitals in the world have an opera—even Russia.” ‘‘I think the onera here in Washington should be a civic building,” Mr. Warren said. When told that most public buildings in the District were owned by the Government, he added: “Ah, Congress. Congress never has, in its entire history, been in terested in music.” •The opera stars said they were “excited” about doing the duet from Act II from “Tosca” by Puc cini. Selections from operas by Verdi are included in their pro gram. Vanarsdell to End 49 Years in GPO In a testimonial dinner for James W.
