WOL Sold to WWDC;
Latter to Take Over
Purchase of radio Stations WOL
and WOL-FM from the Cowles
Broadcasting Co. of Des Moines,
Iowa, w'as announced yesterday
by Capital Broadcasting Co.,
which operates Station WWDC
Ben Strouse. vice president of
Capital, said the purchase price
was ‘‘in the neighborhood of

day. Action by the FCC is ex
pected to require at least 90 days.
During that period WOL, a Mu
tual Network outlet, will continue
to be operated by its present man
agement, Mr. Strouse said.
At the same time, he announced
that the present facilities of
WWDC and WWDC-FM will be
disposed of and a purchaser is ex
pected to be announced within the
next 30 days.
WOL has been on the air since
1924 and WWDC has been in op
eration since 1941.
It is planned to move WWDC
to 1,260 kilocycles, the present
WOL frequency, after FCC ap
proval of the purchase, a move
that will boost WWDC’s power
from 250 to 5,000 watts. The call
letters WWDC will be retained.
The Cowles company is selling
the stations here to devote its
efforts to radio and television in
terests in the Midwest and in
Boston, the announcement said.
