He also studied at j Strayer College of Accountancy, the American Institute of Banking and American University. Mr. Rea worked for the South ern Railway before being employed by the bank. Edward Mcllhenny, 77, Of Avery Island, Dies ly th* Aisociattd Pr*il NEW IBERIA, La.. Aug. 9 —Ed ward Avery Mcllhenny will be buried today at the island he made famous as a bird sanctuary and botanic garden. The noted 77-year-old natural ist died at his Avery Island home yesterday after a long illness. Avery Island, south of here, was given to Mr. Mcllhenny's family in 1800 through a Spanish grant. He made it into a refuge for cor morants, herons, ibis and ducks and began importing flowers to the spot of land in the Gulf of Mexico. He ruled the island like a baron, but he was always a benevolent baron. Employes called him M’sieu Ned. M’sieu Ned set broken bones, looked at grade school report cards and was overseer of activities on the island. The rest of the time he spent as a naturalist, artist and author. He found time to write books on his hobbies, on alligators and on Negro spirituals. He was naturalist on the first Peary relief expedition in 1892, and later organized an Arctic ex pedition of his own. He is survived by his widow, the former Mary Matthews of New Orleans, and three daughters. Hearing Set August 23 On Power Merger Plan The Public Utilities Commission has scheduled a public hearing at 10 a.m. August 23 on the applica tion of the Potomac Electric Power Co. for permission to merge with its wholly owned subsidiary, the Braddock Light & Power Co. The Braddock company serves the Pentagon Building and about 2,000 other customers in one sec tion of Arlington. It Is a Vir ginia corporation. Pepco has asked that a joint agreement be allowed which would merge the Braddock com pany into Pepco. Under the agreement. Pepco, which is now ^ District corporation, would be come both a Virginia and a Dis trict corporation. Pepco stated in its application to the PUC that, because of the lack of suitable sites in the Dis trict, its expansion of plant facil ities must take place on sites in Virginia. Allocates $50,000 For North River Valley By the Asiocioted Pre»» The Agriculture Department yesterday allocated $50,000 from an emergency soil conservation fund for stream rehabilitation work in the North River Valley above Bridgewater.
