Aug. 22.—The Na tionalists claimed more successes today on the vital Central China war front north of this Commu nist-threatened, refugee capital. The government asserted a Red thrust to cut the Canton-Hankow railway and isolate the Hunan province defense bastion of Heng yang had been thrown back. Not only had the threat to the vital Canton-Hengyang communi cations been removed—for the mo ment at least—but Gen. Pai Chung-hsi’s eastern flank was temporarily out of danger. Anjen Reported Retaken. The Nationalists said they beat back Red Gen. Lin Piao’s attempt | to take Leiyang, 230 miles north of Canton, after his forces had by passed Pai’s central China de fense headquarters at Hengyang. 135 miles farther north. The government counterattack carried 30 miles northeast of Leiyang to recapture Anjen, which guards Pai’s eastern flank, it was I reported. This forced one division of Lin’s 145th Red Army to retreat and two I regiments were wiped out. the Nationalists said. | The government also claimed a victory 50 miles northwest of Hengyang where it said Lin’s en tire 51st Army was wiped out. (This would be a total of about 30,000 men if the army’s three divisions were at full strength.) Escape Hatch Still Available. The Ministry of National De fense asserted most machine guns and rifles taken from the Red 51st were Russian made. Destruction of the 51st should relieve the pressure on Pai’s west ern flank and protect his possible escape hatch to his native Kwangsi I Province to the southwest. In Kiangsi Province, the Na tionalists reported heavy fighting ; around Sinfeng, 180 miles north west of Canton. This town is 55 miles east of Tayu, where the Communists have made their closest penetration to Canton— 170 miles away. Six Armies Reported in Action. I Par to the northwest in Kansu 'province, the battle for Lanchow, 'the capital, was reported in full swing. The National Defense Ministry reported two divisions of Red Gen. Peng Teh-huai’s 3d Army had been wiped out in the southern outskirts of the city. Peng’s 60th Army, attacking Lanchow from the east, also was reported thrown back. The Red assault was said here to include six armies, which would mean 120,000 to 150,000 men. It is difficult to square the Na tionalist claims with the Na tionalist withdrawal of the bulk of their forces from Lanchow and indications that they intended to fight only a rearguard .action there. 12 Crazed Convicts Recaptured; 1 at Large ly the Associated Prm M1LLEDGEVILLE, Ga., Aug. 22. —Thirteen “stir-crazy” convicts escaped from a ward for the crim inally insane at the State Hos pital yesterday. More Jobs for Printers Predicted by Government • y the Associated Press The job outlook for the next few years in the printing trades is for “a continued, but much more moderate and irregular,, growth,” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a study prepared for the Veterans Administratibn’s use in counseling disabled veterans, the bureau said major factors con tributing to a generally promising outlook are: “persistently rising demands” for imprinted products, and increasing availability of new machinery and supplies. American technicians will aid Ecuador in establishing a farm machinery center in the Guayas River Basin, to rent machines to growers in that district. * * 1 Finer Preparation *1 for safely, thoroughly cleansing Your Dental Plates Wonderful new Plato is a special foam action cleanser, finer beyond comparison.
