Catholics and Poland
May Sign Pact Today,
Church Source Says

WARSAW, Poland, Sept. 30.—A
prominent Catholic source said
yesterday that an agreement re
solving the difficulties between the
government of Poland and the
Catholic Church may be signed
today.
This source said, however, that;
official announcement may be de
layed for a week so both parties
can make arrangements necessary j
to put it into effect. When the [
announcements made, he said, it
most likely will come from the
church.
Points in Agreement.
According to this informant,
these are the points of the agree
ment:
1. The church will recognize the i
government.
2. Diocesan boundaries in terri
tories obtained by Poland after
the war will be reorganized.
3. The church will not engage
In activities opposing Marxism-!
Leninism if granted educational,
freedom.
4. Church will combat the claims j
made by Germany to Western j
territories taken over by Poland j
rffter the war.
5. Church lands will be brought
within the scope of agrarian re
form and subjected to some form
of taxation.
Vatican Decision Needed.
It is understood that a major
difficulty was the degree to which
the Polish church hierarchy would
oppose the German claims on the
Western territories. These claims
are supported by the Catholic
church in Germany. The govern
ment also considers that the Vati
can supports these German claims.
Pinal disposition of the territories
awaits conclusion of a peace
treaty with Germany.
The informant pointed out that |
a Vatican decision will be needed
if the boundaries of the dioceses,
are to be revised.
