Episcopal Assembly Gets Motion Assailing Marriage Limitation By Caspar Nannes Star Staff Correspondent SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 1—A resolution warning members of the Episcopal church against marrying Roman Catholics under conditions “imposed by modern Roman canon law” is now before the 56th General Convention of , the Protestant Episcopal Church iln the United States of America. The motion, introduced in the House of Deputies yesterday, hit strongly at conditions in a mixed marriage which involve "a promise to have their children brought up ’ in a religious system which they themselves cannot accept.” It further declared “that in no cir cumstances should a member of this church give any understand ing, as a condition of marriage, that the children should be brought up in the practice of an other communion.” “This problem comes up in every parish when one of our commu inicants marries a Roman Catho lic,” the Rev. J. Kenneth Morris iof Columbia, S. C., author of the resolution, told the House of Deputies. Yesterday was chiefly devoted by both the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies in submit ting resolutions to the conven tion. Resolutions Proposed. Among the resolutions to be brought eventually before the convention are the following: 1. That the church “join with this and other religious and gen eral community groups in urging the 81st Congress to extend the provisions of the present displaced : persons legislation, simplify its J administrative requirement, delete 1 any discriminatory aspects re lated to race, religion or nation ality, and provide the necessary funds to expedite America's full share in the resettlement of these people.” 2. That the church approve a constitutional amendment con ferring full rights for House of Deputies membership for women. 3. That the church change its official name from "Protestant Episcopal Church in the U. S. A.” to the "Episcopal Church in the U. S. A.” f The House of Bishops yesterday approved proposed changes in the church's laws permitting licensed laymen to assist a priest of the church in the administration of the Holy Communion. If the House of Deputies concurs, the change would permit a layman, licensed by the bishop, to admin ister the chalice in the communion service. Part-Time Service Proposed. A proposal allowing men to par ticipate in a limited ministry while earning their living otherwise was also brought to the House of Bishops. Mrs. Theodore O. Wedel. wife of Canon Wedel of Washington Ca thedral, yesterday was re-elected to the Executive Board of the women's auxiliary for a term of three years. Mrs. Wedel, one of eight to be chosen, received the highest number of votes for any one candidate, 97 out of a pos sible 99. The Marshall Plan was praised by the Most Rev. Cyril Foster Garbett, Archbishop of York, to day at a luncheon of the Com monwealth Club as building a real economic defense for many Euro pean countries against commu nism. The archbishop also made a strong defense of the English Labor government’s social experi ments, asserting these welfare services “will prove a rampart of defense against any growth of communism in the United King dom.” , International control of atomic energy was also called for by the speaker as essential to peace. Close “military and economic” co-operation between European countries and the United States is needed if a successful resistance to Russia will be effected in case of an invasion by Soviet armies, Archbishop Garbett said. Noting that steps “have been taken towards this,” the speaker then assrted “the Atlantic Pact is ■ a great policy of far sighted statesmanship for the protection of the Western civilization to which we all belong ... (it) gives greater hope for the preservation of peace than any other single event since the defeat of Germany and Japan ” Farm Convention Called HAGERSTOWN, Md„ Oct. 1 f/P). —Some 500 delegates of farm bu reaus in several cities will come to Hagerstown for a regional con vention Thursday and Friday.
