Police Catch Fugitive
On Sharpsburg Road

FREDERICK, Md., Dec. 7—An
escaped convict from West Vir
ginia was captured by Maryland
State police early today near
! Sharpsburg after he eluded a trap
seven hours earlier.
State troopers identified the
man as John R. Shriver, 33, who
was serving a life term as a
habitual criminal at the time he
escaped from the West Virginia
! State Penitentiary at Moundsville
last July 12.
Police Clerk A. E. Appleby said
Maryland officials had been
alerted by the Pennsylvania State
police that Shriver was seen
headed for the Hagerstown
| Sharpsburg area of Western
Maryland in an automobile stolen
last Monday in Martlnsburg,
W. Va.
Mr. Appleby said officers spotted
and moved in on the car last
night in the vicinity of Sharps
burg, but Shriver escaped into a
field near the Potomac River.
Additional police were sum
moned, search parties formed and
road blocks set up.
At 4:30 am., Shriver tried un
successfully to run a road block
in another car, this one stolen
'in Sharpsburg. Officers said he
offered no armed resistance when
taken Into custody.

Woman Lifer Back in Jail
After Cold Night at Large

ROCKWELL CITY, Iowa, Dec.
7.—A warm reformatory cottage
early today lured Mrs. Opal Dixon
back from six and one-half chilly
hours of freedom. v
Mrs. Dixon, 38, escaped last
night from the unwalled Iowa
Women’s Reformatory here where
she is serving a life term for the
$2,950 “syringe” robbery of a
downtown Des Moines bank.
Officials said Mrs. Dixon told
them she "couldn’t stand it any

The reformatory superintendent
said Mrs. Dixon remained hidden
in a corn field near the reforma
tory until she “got so cold she had
to come in.”
Mrs. Dixon was convicted of
the January 22, 1947, holdup of
the Des Moines Bank and Trust
Co. She cowed bank personnel
and customers when she flourished
a mouthwash-filled syringe and
threatened to “blow the place to
pieces.”
$70,000 in Seals Sold
BALTIMORE, Dec. 7 (&).—Sale
of Christmas seals already has
brought $70,000 to the Maryland ,
•Tuberculosis Association, Sale Di
rector William B. Matthews, jr.,
reported yesterday. Mr. Matthews
said the returns represent slightly
more than 20 per cent of the
State-wide goal. *

mark of downtown Baltimore, Is

tear down the old wooden trestlo
and reroute the one carline still
