Ramifications Shown In Wicomico Gaming By Two New Arrests ty th« Aitociated frm SALISBURY, Md„ May 2.—The arrest of two men from neighbor ing communities revealed yester day that last week’s special gam bling survey by the Wicomico County grand jury had ramifica tions throughout Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore. The grand jury returned gaming indictments against eight persons after a five-day investigation of charges made by the Salisbury Times. Two of those indicted taken into custody yesterday were Stacy L. Lewis, a coin machine dealer at Cambridge, and Brantley Watkins, operator of a tourist court south of Pocomoke City. Each Held on $500 Bond. They were charged with ‘‘keep ing. managing and having an in terest in gaming devices, to wit a slot machine,” in Wicomico Coun ty. Each was released on $500 bond. Four men were arrested and re leased on bond soon after the in dictments were returned last Fri day. The two others charged have not yet been taken into custody. James S. Hastings, one of the four arested earlier, was named in four indictments and posted $2,000 bond. He is a coin machine dealer. Frank and Lester Parsons, partners in a music box business, and J. Edward Waller, who has a confectionery, face one charge each and posted $500 bond. Trial Due About May 22. The cases are expected to come to trial about May 22. The jury was called ftito special session last week by Judge Levin Claude Bailey after the Times charged that county authorities had grown lax in the enforcement of gambling laws. me limes also published a story that gamblers had ap proached Alexander T. Both Oscar Morris, editor of the Times, and Mr. Grier were called before the grand jury. The jury reported a conflict developed in their testimony and there was no basis for an indictment. Manor Park Citizens Elect Cruikshanks as President Benjamin C. Cruikshanks was elected president of the Manor Park Citizens’ Association last night at the last meeting of the season. Also elected were John D. Smoot, first vice president; Mrs. Carrie R. Seaquist, second vice president; Mrs. Elsie D. Harsch, recording secretary; Herbert G. Powell, corresponding secretary; Harry G. Corcoran, treasurer, and Mr. Cruikshanks and Homer J. Smith, delegates to the Federa tion of Citizens’ Associations. The group voted to request that the Upshur street hospital for tu berculosis patients be sold and that Glenn Dale Sanitarium be enlarged with the proceeds. The meeting was held in the Whittier School. Fifth and Sheri dan streets N.W., and was con ducted by Homer J. Smith, retir ing president. Va., May 2.—One of the few schools of its kind in the east is busy turning out trained mechanics and skilled aircraft workers for the aircraft industry. Located in the outskirts of this West Virginia city, the school, operated by the Martinsburg Air craft Service, Inc., has recently observed its second anniversary. At present there are nine in structors teaching 27 different phases of aircraft technology to more than 200 students, most of them veterans. The school, approved by CAA, is the only aircraft mechanical school in the seven States under the Huntington regional office of the Veterans Administration. In addition to its regular day sessions, the school also holds night classes for those students who must hold down regular jobs while learning to become aircraft mechanics. When a student com pletes the courses here, he is li censed to become a mechanic or aircraft worker either at some air field or with an aircraft company. Many of the graduates have been employed at the Fairchild plant at Hagerstown. Md„ a few miles across the Potomac. Charles H. Bolton, formerly of Roanoke, Va., started giving in structions to a few students at the local airfield, where he was employed as a mechanic. Soon de mands for training outstripped facilities at the field, and Mr. Bolton moved to his present lo cation. Here he has room and fa cilities to train more than 400 stu dents. I Japan Gets More Priests TOKYO The number of Catholic priests in Japan has in creased almost 85 per cent since the end of the war, according to figures of the National Catholic Committee of Japan. It lists 740 priets, three-fourths of them foreigners, now in Japan, ^there also are more than 2,500 nuns, three-quarters of them Japanese. A recent survey showed about 140,000 Catholics in this country. D. C. Police Seek Gunman Police today were seeking a lone gunman who held up a small radio shop at 727 Vi Twelfth street NJE. and made off with between $75 and $100 and a green table model radio. Lawrence Glenn. 41, colored, of 1822 Vernon street N.W., co owner of the Northeast Radio Re pair Shop, said the man entered the store about 5:30 p.m. yester day and produced a .32-caliber revolver. Who Got $75 af Radio Shop Mr. Glenn has no cash register, so the robber took the money from Mr. Glenn's pockets, police were told. As the man left, he scooped up the radio from the counter.
