(Texaco Station) ★ General Electric Television John DeFerrari, 86, Rich Boston Recluse, Found Dead in Room •y tha Associated Trots BOSTON, May 3. — John DeFerrari, 86. multimillionaire former fruit peddler who gave more than a million dollars in trust to the Boston public library, was found dead yesterday in his Beacon Hill hideaway. His body was found by the man ager of the Beacon Chambers, who said Mr. DeFerrari had occupied a room there for 25 years under | the name of Henry Howe. Police, summoned by the man ager, Hyram Skeels, said Mr. DeFerrari apparently died several days ago. Mr. Skeels said the eccentric multimillionaire refused to admit chambermaids and always made his own bed and tidied up the room. Mr. DeFerrari made a fortune investing the profits from his fruit business, inherited from his father, an Italian immigrant. He watched his money closely and was accustomed to fasten his pockets with large safety pins to foil pickpockets. In 1947 he presented the Bos ton public library with more than $1 million to start a $3 million trust fund. The trust was irrevocable, but had two conditions. Mr. Deferrari requested the library trustees to use the first million of earned in i come to build a wing or a ropm to bear his name, and asked that his portrait be hung there. The trustees promptly appro priated (5,000 and had his portrait painted. Mr. Deferrari possessed no auto mobile, radio or telephone. Owner of property in the North and West Ends and the Back Bay section, he walked all over the city to col lect his rents. He never married, but kept a house on Wesley place in the North End, near his Ferry street birthplace. He often went there to cook his own meals on his mother’s old-fashioned range. Eldest of eight children, he leaves only one sister.
