U. S. Action Expected Soon on Problem of Displaced Germans By the Associated Press The* United States may soon start international action to de cide what to do with some 9 mil lion Germans driven out of Iron Curtain countries. This was indicated today follow ing a White House conference between President Truman and Chairman Walter of the Immigra tion Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee. The refugees are persons of German origin who were expelled from their adopted homelands when Communist regimes took over. Mr. Walter told a reporter that Mr. Truman recognizes the plight of the German refugees as a major problem and “looks favor ably” upon United States initia tive in finding an answer to it. Congress already has provided Mr. Truman with authority for American participation in an in ternational resettlement confer ence. Lorton Bloodhounds To Help Canal Zone Word of a pretty smelly busi ness has leaked out of the Depart ment of Corrections. And it all came from the direc tor himself, Donald Clemmer. Here's the story: It seems the Canal Zone, which harbors about 125 inmates in its prison, had not a single blood hound. Somehow, officials there ?ot wind of the well-trained pack — at the Lorton 'Va.l Reformatory and put in a request. Mr. Clemmer responded by de claring as surplus two of his dogs, Pat and Blondie. They promptly were sent to the Canal Zone. Their job down there is not only to catch any prisoners who might escape, but to see that the Canal Zone has its own pack some day. Arlington Girl Wins Trip to U. N. on Quiz Miss Ann Lsmoureux. 17-year old senior at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, yester day won a trip to the United Na tions at Lake Success. In a quiz on the UN. conducted oy the Arlington League of Women Voters with eight contestants from the high school taking part. Miss Lamoureux was high scorer. Festival to Mark Opening of Dupont Underpass The Commissioners have ap proved gold street lights and a folk dance festival to embellish the formal opening of the Dupont Circle Underpass on May 16. Seventy-three globes around the circle and in the vicinity north and south will give off a golden light, and the folk dancing will be held between 8:15 and 10 p.m. A citizens' committee is arrang ing the ceremonies, which will take place at noon. Co-chairmen of the affair are Charles Stofberg special assistant to Commissioner John Russell Young: Horace J. Meyers, president of the Connecti cut Avenue Association. Inc., and E. Goring Bliss, president of the Dupont Circle Citizens' Associa tion. Highway officials hope the un derpass can be opened to traffic before the ceremonies. ADVERTISEMENT.
