Music -
Time Fails to Dim
Roland Hayes'
Art in Song
By Alice Eversmon
A Roland Hayes recital - proves
conclusively that passing time
. cannot dim art when it is ground
ed in knowledge and sincerity.
Last night the famous tenor sang
! in the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church
I under the auspices of the Wash
iington Fellowship. It is a minor
matter, in the larger concept he
represents, that his voice has lost
some of the exciting qualities that
belonged to his younger years,
and so thought the number of his
admirers who filled the audito
rium.
Mr. Hayes’ basic approach to
his music springs from the
heart. It is his rare under
standing, not only of text and
style but of the sentiment found
in every word, that makes his per
formance so superior. For
through these means he distills
the musical beauty and warms it
by the strength of his own feel
ing. On the material side, there
is the mastered technique of dic
tion and tone projection, as well
as the sculpturing of phrases.
The present limitations of his
voice were felt chiefly when power
and range were called for. The
use of a lovely mezzo voce caught
to the fullest the special quality
of the classic group consisting of
Dowland’s ’’Come Again, Sweet’
Love,” Haydn’s "Hark, What Ij
Tell to Thee,” Handel’s "Come
and Trip It” and the old English
"Have You Seen B.ut a Whyte
Lily Grow.” While effective also
in “Das Wandern” and ’Wohin”
from Schubert’s "Schoene Muel
lerin,” the additional need of more
equal volume could not be met.
The lack was felt most in To
masi’s "Thou Hast Left Me” and
in Saint-Saens’ ‘Tournoiement,”
although the rapid articulation of
the latter was exceptionally clear.
It also was notable for the piano j
accompaniment played by Regi-1
nald Boardman, whose perform
ance of the trioky score was
excellent. Mr. Boardman collab
orated sensitively throughout the i
recital and was made known also!
as a composer through one of his!
songs, Interpolated in the pro
gram by Mr. Hayes.
Armed Bandit Robs Man
Of $9 and Overcoat
John W. Mallicoat, 24. of 3948
C street S.E. was robbed of $9
and his overcoat last night at
gunpoint by a bandit who then
struck him on the head with the
weapon and fled, police reported.
The bandit, a colored man, held
up Mr. Mallicoat at Ridge and
Anacostia roads S.E. about 10 p.m.

rne crowning point of all the
tenor’s recitals is the group of
spirituals closing his program.
Previously he had sung, as en
cores, "Plenty Good Room” and
‘‘Every Time I Feel The Spirit”
with that special power and grace
he knows well how to create.
“Lord, How Come Me Here” and
"Git Up Chillon, Go ’Roun’ De
Wall,” from the set of Negro work
songs arrange* by Frederick Hall,
were masterly examples of his
artistry in this style. His own
arrangement of Afro-American re
ligious folk songs are treasured
additions to this literature End
Mr. Hayes sang them with fervor.
A change in the printed list
brought “Die Stadt” from Schu
bert’s “Schwanengesang” to re
place the announced “Die Neu
gierige” from his “Schoene Muel
lerin.”
