Chinese Sees English As Universal Language SINGAPORE—If Chinese had been written in romanized char acters 2,000 years ago, it would now be a universal language. Prof. Jou Bienming, of the University of Amoy, said in Singapore. “English is a very sensible lan guage and will one day "become a universal language,” he said. Atom Blasted Canal as Claimed By Russians Is Called Possible i ‘Sy tho Auociatod Pros* LONDON, June 17.—A British scientist declared today atomic blasting such as the Russians claim to have done on a Turkestan irrigation canal is a practical pos sibility. Writing m the Journal of the British Atomic Scientists’ Associa- ■ tion, the physicist—J. M. Hasted— also.made these predictions: 1. Atomic blasts may some day clear away the ice of Antarctica and open the mineral resources of the frozen continent. 2. They may provide a means of diverting lava flows from active volcanos in inhabited areas. 3. They may be used to control earthquakes. ' The Russian irrigation project —the Russians say—consists of building a channel 2,500 miles longi to divert the waters of the Yenisei and Ob Rivers, which now flow into the Arctic Ocean, to the Aral and Caspian Seas. Deep Canal Needed. “Most of the river bed can bej comparatively easily constructed," Hasted wrote, “but through the so-called Turgai Gates a 60-foot deep canal must be cut out for a length of 570 miles. ' “At the deepest point a cutting of some 160 feet is necessary, and it is in this region that the blast ing by atomic fission is employed. “It may seem at first sight that the use of atomic fission for such a task is unnecessary, and fraught with numerous difficulties. “It is well known that the crater formed by an explosion of the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT could be much deeper than 160—as much as 700 feet. "The first atom bombs dropped | on Nagasaki and Hiroshima were rated as equal in explosive force to 20,000 tons of TNT. "The impracticability of making any other than a spherical crater ; means that much of the explo i sion «will be wasted, unless pecu liar geological conditions pre ' vailed. 10 Craters Required. "But a 160-foot crater would require 200 tons of TNT, and 10 such craters would be required to excavate the length of a canal which would be covered by one atomic explosion. "The drilling operations re quired to sink 200 tons of TNT— say 10 railway wagons full—for each of 10 crSters would make such a project discouraging. It is evident that the use of fissile material would be a great help, provided the work is on a suffi ciently large scale and a suffi cient quantity of fissile material 1 is available to allow several ex plosions.” I Compton Says Reds Fog Issue With Atom Claims BERLIN, June 17 OP)—Dr. Ar I thur H. Compton, noted American j physicist, declared today the Rus jsians are "just fogging the issue” by claiming they are using atomic energy for peaceful purposes in stead of bombs. "They’re concentrating on bombs,” he said in an interview. "If they’ve blown a mountain away during their experimenta tion, it was an accident, not a public works project. Dynamite is cheaper for that kind of blasting.” Dr. Compton, chancellor of j Washington University of St. Louis, arrived here by plane to deliver an address on atomic en ergy tomorrow night before the* Berlin Society for Christian-Jew ish Co-operation. / I Births Reported (From Use D.
