World Church Council Opens Meeting of Central Committee By the Associated Press TORONTO, Ont., July 8.— Protestant and Orthodox Church leaders gathered here today to begin a week-long study of world wide religious problems. The occasion is the annual meeting of the 90-member Central Committee of the World Council of Churches. The council includes about 160,000,000 church mem bers in 44 countries of all major Christian confessions except Ro man Catholicism. These are some of the problems on which the delegates will act: Minority church rights in coun tries dominated by a single state recognized religious group. Chris tian judgments on existing politi cal and .social systems. Means of ! bringing the Christian gospel to large industrial populations. De fining of a common function of the world council, while assuring democratic control by the 156 member churches. 1953 Meeting Set. The World Council was formed at Amsterdam, The Netherlands, August 23, 1948. The second as sembly of,the council will be held at Northwestern University in 1953. The committee is vested with authority to act for the World Council between the sittings of the Council’s Assembly every five years. ! Formation of the World Council removed some of the disunity in Christendom dating from the great schism of 1054, when the Christian Church divided on an East-West basis. Through the council, member churches act together at present in such matters as inter-church aid, service to refugees, interna tional affairs, the study of social and religious issues and the en largement of opportunities in church life for all persons. Bishop Dun Arrives. The World Council has no au thority to question the doctrinal positions of its member churches. The chairman of the central committee is the Right Rev. j George K.- A. Bell. Anglican bishop of Chichester, Eng. He is as sisted by Dr. Franklin Clark Fry of New York, president of the : United Lutheran Church in America. Charles P. Taft of Cincinnati, former president of the Federal j Council of Churches, representing the Episcopal Church. G. U. Names Dr. Burke Professor of Pediatrics Dr. Frederic G. Burke has been named professor pediatrics at Georgetown University, the school of medicine announced yesterday. A graduate of Georgetown and of Seton Hall College, Dr. Burke, who is 33, interned at Georgetown Hospital, later practiced at Chil dren’s Hospital and held a teach ; ing fellowship at George Wash ington Hospital for three years. | Before attaining his new posi tion. Dr. Burke was assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at Georgetown. He has written many papers for medical journals. A native of Liverpool, England, !
