Second Defendant on Trial In Murder of Missionary By the Associated Press ALEXANDER CITY, Ala., Aug. 17—The State today brought a second defendant to trial on charges of murdering an elderly missionary. Charles McGraw of Helena, Ala., went on trial in the same court room whree Mrs. Catherine By strom, 39, yesterday was found guilty of second degree murder, She was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Both were accused of slaying Mrs. Lillian Euphemia Schleifer, 70, a Seventh - Day Adventist Church missionary. Mrs. Schleifer disappeared after leaving Waco, Tex., on a trip to Jamaica, in the British West Indies. Her bullet-pierced body was found in a lake near here February 25. Defense Attoreny Tom Young said in his final arguments that the State’s evidence was largely circumstantial. Hhe charged the prosecution failed to produce a death weapon or show where the killing took place. Mrs. Bystrom did not take the stand. She had told officers she gave Mrs. Schleifer a ride to Birmingham, Ala., and that the older woman left her there.
