Former Commander
Of Federal DAV Post
John Wesley Walker, a former
Disabled American Veterans' com
mander here, who became ill last
month shortly before he was to
accept a post with the Civil Serv
ice Commission, died yesterday in
Bethesda Naval Hospital.
Mr. Walker, a 41-year-old Navy
veteran, had looked forward to
getting back on the job after the
completion of his four-year busi
ness administration course at
American University last June.
A claims examiner at the com
mission before the war, Mr. Walker
was taken to the hospital five
weeks ago, just two days before he
was to have returned to work. He
became afflicted with heart disease
while serving in the Pacific during
the war.
Born in Gaithersburg, Md„ he
later lived in Rockville and came
to Washington more than 20
years ago. He left the commission
in 1942 and saw action as a phar
macist mate on the cruiser U. S. S.
Boston in the Pacific. He was
discharged in June, 1944.
Mr. Walker headed Federal
Chapter, No. 1, of the DAV in
1945-6. His DAV associates label
ed him a "hard worker,” who led
fund-raising drives and often vis
ited wounded veterans in hospitals.
Mr. Walker, who lived at 422
Eighteenth street N.E., leaves his
wife, Mrs. Mildred B. Walker. Two
sisters. Mrs. Calphurnia Monday
and Mrs. Joe. Dawson, reside in
Rockville. There were no children.
Funeral and burial services will
be private.

Pauline,” died yesterday.
Mr. Stringer, a novelist, poet and
play write, had been ill a long time
at his home here.

novels, a dozen books of poetry;
and many dramas and comedies J
His serial, the "Perils of Paul-;
ine,” made early movie history
with Pearl White as its star.

Auto Dealer, Dies
W. Earl Dungan. 56, a Metro
politan policeman, who retired two
years ago after serving 25 years
with the force, died yesterday at
Doctors Hospital. He had been ill
since August 30.
Mr. Dungan, who lived at 642
Gallatin street N.W., also had been
; in the automobile business for 30
| years. He formerly owned Dun
gan’s Motor Co., at 5800 Georgia
avenue N.W., until he became as
sociated with Potomac Motor
Sales, Inc., two years ago.
Born and reared in Northum
berland County, Va., Mr. Dungan
came here 33 years ago. He served
with Nos. 6, 13 and 11 precincts,
retiring from the latter. A for
mer foot and motorcycle police
man, Mr. Dungan spent the last
few years as a traffic officer at
the Benning Elementary School,
where he was affectionately known
as "Pop.”
An active church worker, Mr.
Dungan sang in the choir at the
Petworth Baptist Church and
■ taught a young boys’ Sunday
School class.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Muriel

Miss Sarepfa Hodges,
Pharmacist Here, Dies
Miss Sarepta (Sara) M. Hodges,
50, a pharmacist here for about
12 years, died of leukemia Tuesday
at Germantown hospital, German
town, Pa., friends here have been
'informed. She formerly lived at
13804 T street N.W.
Born in Caswell County, N. C.J
Miss Hodges attended grade and
high schools in Virginia and was
graduated from the Medical Col-i
lege of Virginia, Richmond, Va., in
the early 1920’s.
While in Washington, Miss
Hodges was a pharmacist with the
Peoples Drug Store Co. for several
years. She also worked in the
isame capacity at George Wash
ington University for about three
i years.
Before coming to Washington
j she was in charge of the drug room
at Emory University in Georgia.
Miss Hodges "went to Phila
delphia about two years ago to
work for a Government agency.
She was there when stricken with i
leukemia.
She is survived by two broth
ers, Herbert Hodges of the T street
address, Howard Hodges, 2626
Fort Scott drive, Arlington; and
four sisters, Mrs. Robert W.
Michie, 3702 Harrison street N.W.,
Mrs. Waldo Hull, Bryn Mawr, Pa.,
Mrs. George Chaney, Norfolk, Va.,
and Mrs. Floyd Hall, Danville. Va.
Funeral services were to be held I
at 2 p.m. today in Danville, Va.
Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery,
Ringgold, Va.
Apples consist of approximately
80 per cent water.
Gen. Charet, 79, Dies;
Organized 'Taxi Army'

DIJON, France, Sept. 15.—Th*
death of Gen. Charles Charet, 79,
; credited with organizing the "taxi
cab army” which drove reserve!
to the first Battle of the Marne
from Paris in World War I, wai
announced yesterday.
Gen. Charet was a pioneer air
man in the French Army and held
the rank of general of an artillery
| division.
I Forty thousand troops were said
to have been moved to the front
1 by the hastily organized fleet ol
7,000 Paris taxis in 1914. The
i mass transport saved Paris from a
German flanking movement.
