Whitman Question: How can I soundproof a wooden door that has been nailed shut, located directly between a small flat and a. grocery store? Noises from the store are heard in the flat and vice versa. Any sug gestions will be appreciated. Answer: Sound passes through the joints around the. door much more than through the wood it self. To soundproof an unused door, the joint around it should be packed with felt. Pelt weather stripping can be used. In addition, a sheet of stiff insulating board cut to fit can be set in the door way. being supported by pieces of two-by-four at top, bottom and at two places across the opening. Question: I have a^bronze statue that I would like very much to paint. I hear that bronze is very difficult to paint over, so can you tell me how I may best paint my statue? Answer: To paint the bronze, clean it with turpentine and fine (0 or 00) steel wool, removing all oil and dirt from the surfaces. Apply an eAamel undercoater of a color approximately that of vhe finished coht and finish with a good grade of enamel. I suppose you have a good reason for want ing to paint the statue; it seems hard to understand why you wish to do so. Released by Consolidated Newa Featurai. 527 Ingraham St. N.W. Truman Asks War Contracts Include Small Business By the Asiociated Press President Truman instructed Government officials yesterday to guard against concentration of de fense spending lest they injure small business. “Partial mobilization, in the ab sence of protective measures,” he said in a memorandum to various agencies, may expose the economy to the threat of “undue concen tration of economic power” and “imperil the very system we are seeking to protect.” He pointed out that in numer ous provisions of the Defense Pro duction Act Congress “indicated its concern over this danger to free competitive enterprise.” Mr. Truman’s instructions went to the heads of the Defense De partment and the armed services, the chairman of the National Se curity Resources Board, most of the cabinet departments, housing, financing and other officials.
