HILLSIDE 7700 Son of Cognac Mayor Explains Brandy Shortage of War Years I By George Kennedy The great brandy shortage of the war years was explained to day by Michel Martell of Cognac, France, who is staying at the | Hotel Statler. “The occupation was very diffi cult,” said Mr. Martell, a Cam bridge graduate' whose accent is more English than French. "My father, who died last win ter, was the mayor of Cognac. Over there a mayor is responsible for many more things than your mayors are. The Germans were holding him responsible for brandy production. Used the Slow-Down. “And we were giving them the slow-down. There would be a breakdown in the bottle factory. Then when that was fixed, the corks would arrive and they would be the wrong size. After that was taken care of, it would be found that the cases had been made wrong and the bottles wouldn’t fit. “They would threaten to send me back to Germany.
